Evidentiary scope

The labels place the plants at Tatsienlou in 1893. They give no altitude, habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

P06781393 and P06884274 were read from the holder's original images (3,375 × 5,157 and 3,309 × 5,048 pixels), fetched from its image server; P06884292 and P06884275 from GBIF's cached copies (2,000 pixels wide), with P06884292's slips checked again on the original.

  • P06781393, field label (printed or stamped, completed by hand): (Année 1893) + Août / HISTOIRE NATURELLE (Botanique) / THIBET Oriental / Principauté du KIA-LA / [ta-tsien-lou] / [9?] Parts + N° 844. / Tatsienlou / J. A. SOULIÉ / Missionnaire Apostolique. The figure before Parts (a 9 or a ♀ sign) is not used.
  • P06781393, museum label. 138 (by hand) / HERB. MUS. PARIS. / Cannabis sativa L. / THIBET ORIENTAL. / TA-TSIEN-LOU (Principauté de KIALA). / J.-A. SOULIÉ. 1893.
  • P06884292. Old slips: N° 844. / Sept. 189[3?] / Tatsienlou. Museum label: Cannabis sativa L. / Chine occid.: Tatsienlou / R. P. Soulié / Reçu le (blank).
  • P06884274. The museum label only, the same as P06781393's, with 138. No field label.
  • The field number. The first figure on both field slips has a closed lower bowl under a flat, hooked top stroke; the two 4s after it are the writer's open-topped 4. It is read as 8 in a second, blind reading and by the museum's catalogue (844 on both sheets), and the page takes 844. It could also be read as a 3 written with a flat top, which would give 344.
  • The year on P06884292's slip ends in a figure that was read as 3 in one reading and, with low confidence, as 2 in the other. The page takes 1893, the year printed on P06781393's form.
  • P06884275. HERBIER E. DRAKE / Cannabis sativa L.; the same printed museum label, with 138.

Georeferencing

The point 30.00, 101.95 is the town of Kangding, OpenStreetMap node 244080901 (30.00026, 101.95456). The Wikidata item for Kangding (Q1013814) carries the alias Tachienlu. The point places the gathering at the town the labels name, not at a spot near it; the labels give no altitude to check it against. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.

Editorial treatment

Four sheets, one accession. P06781393 and P06884292 carry the same field number, 844, at Tatsienlou, in 1893. P06781393's museum label carries the figure 138, and so do the identical museum labels of P06884274 and P06884275, which have no field label. The 138 is read as the museum's number for one sending, and the four sheets as one gathering. P06781393, which has both labels, is the infobox image.

Date. P06781393's form gives August and P06884292's slip September; the year, 1893, is stored.

Collector. The collector field takes J. A. Soulié from the field label. He is Jean-André Soulié (1858–1905), a priest of the Missions Étrangères de Paris, who reached Tatsienlou in 1886 and in ten years sent more than 7,000 plants to the Paris museum; he was killed at Yaregong in 1905 (Fournier's account of the French missionary naturalists, 1932; French Wikipedia; Harvard botanist index). The sources differ on the day of his death (14 April in Fournier and French Wikipedia, 11 December in English Wikipedia). The prose links Jean-André Soulié.

Source discrepancies

  • The two field slips disagree on the month: August on P06781393, September on P06884292. The catalogue follows each sheet: September 1893 for P06884292, 1893 for the other three.
  • The catalogue gives the field number of P06781393 as Missionnaire Apostolique/844, taking in the printed words below the number on the form, and that of P06884274 and P06884275 as 138, the museum label's figure.
