Sonnerat s.n. is a herbarium accession of cannabis from India, brought back by Pierre Sonnerat, and the holotype of Cannabis indica, the name Jean-Baptiste Lamarck published in 1785. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris keeps the sheet in Lamarck's herbarium as P00562707.[1]: 94[2]
Collection and locality
John McPartland and Ernest Small cite the sheet as undated and annotated Chanvre rapporte de l’Inde par M. Sonnerat ("hemp brought back from India by M. Sonnerat"). They place it likely at Pondicherry, adding that most of Sonnerat's specimens in the Paris herbarium were collected around Pondicherry between 1775 and 1778.[1]: 94
The museum's catalogue names P. Sonnerat as the collector and India as the country, gives no locality (s.loc.) and no date, and files the sheet in the Herbier de Lamarck among the museum's historical herbaria, with the note Acquis en Novembre 1886 ("acquired in November 1886").[2][3]
Typification
Lamarck described Cannabis indica in the Encyclopédie méthodique (1785). McPartland and Small cite this sheet as its holotype, and the museum's catalogue records the same type status.[1]: 93–94[2] In their 2020 classification the name is the basionym of Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. indica, which they call the South Asian domesticate.[1]: 93
Specimen and identification
The catalogue records the sheet as flowering and files it under Cannabis indica Lam.[2][3] GBIF matches the name to Cannabis sativa subsp. indica (Lam.) E.Small & Cronquist.[3]
