Schultes 26508 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected near Kandahar, Afghanistan, between 13 and 20 December 1971 by Richard Evans Schultes, from a compact plant about a metre tall with very dark green leaves. Five sheets are held in the Economic Botany Herbarium of the Harvard University Herbaria, and Ernest Small and Arthur Cronquist cited the number, with duplicates at Ottawa (DAO) and Harvard (ECON), in their 1976 classification of Cannabis.[1][2]: 428
Collection and locality
Harvard's index gives the locality of all five sheets as Near Kandahar and the date as 13–20 December 1971.[1] Another of Schultes's numbers from near Kandahar that month, 26505, was designated in 2020 the epitype of Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. afghanica (Schultes 26505 (1971)).[3] Schultes's sheets of number 26507, a male plant, place it Adjacent to plant of collections #26506, 26508 and describe it as Much weaker than female plants in same field.[4]
Field observations
Harvard transcribes the note on four of the sheets as Plant compact, 3 feet tall. Leaves very dark green, with small differences of spelling and abbreviation.[5][6][7][8] On the fifth it reads Plant compact, 3 ft. tall leaves very dark green smell of citronella pf very potent in all parts of plant.[1]
Specimen and identification
On 16 March 1976 Small determined four of the sheets as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica; Harvard files them under Cannabis L.[5][6][7][8] The fifth sheet is filed under Cannabis sativa subsp. indica, with no determiner recorded.[1] Small and Cronquist cite 26508 among the Afghan collections of C. sativa subsp. indica var. indica.[2]: 428
