2004 RSC Kalamata Red IBL is a landrace cannabis accession from Messenia, Greece, listed as Kalamata Red in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC classifies it as a Greek cannabis heirloom and files it under both its Heirlooms and Landraces categories.[1]
Geography
RSC reports that the line was collected from a farming family in the Kalamata region, and its sourcing line reads "near Messinia, Kalamata". It gives a latitude of about 37° N.[1]
History
According to RSC, the family had grown the line in their village for more than 30 years until enforcement pressure ended cultivation there, and the village is now abandoned.[1] RSC writes that Kalamata Red was a famous underground brand in the 1970s and 1980s.[1] It considers the origin of the line unverified and reports that the Phylos Galaxy chart shows no immediate ancestor for it. It names the wider Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean as likely origins and calls influence from tropical landraces introduced to Greece in the 1970s "not unlikely".[1]
An RSC blog post of May 2024 names Kalamata Red among the Greek heirlooms that, it says, have had up to a century of selection for use as bud since the Greek hashish industry ended in the 1930s.[2]
Collection Details
The listing gives the sourcing as Delicorganic, near Messinia, Kalamata, Greece (2004), and the Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[3] as Delicorganic, Kalamata, Greece (2004).[1][4] The collection itself is recorded at Kalamata Red General Population 2004. According to RSC, the seeds on sale were produced from several selected mothers and a choice "alpha male" from the 2019 generation. It adds that the most recent generation was selected for less stretchy plants with a shorter flowering period and classic "hashplant" characteristics.[1]
Cultivation Details
RSC gives the purposes as hashish or bud and the harvest as late October. It lists outdoor, greenhouse or indoor growing.[1] Kwik Seeds gives the harvest as October, and versions of the RSC listing from October 2020 to January 2023 gave October to early November.[4][5][6] RSC reports low feeding requirements and excellent resistance to pests, mould and heat.[1]
Botanical Characteristics
RSC gives a height of about 1 to 4 metres and Kwik Seeds 3 to 4.5 metres. Versions of the RSC listing gave 4 to 6 metres from October 2020 to January 2023 and 3 to 6 metres in May 2024.[1][4][5][6][7] RSC describes red colouration as a trait of some plants in the line, particularly in cold conditions, and reports that other phenotypes are light green; Kwik Seeds describes them as light green to gold.[1][4] Both listings give the classification as unknown.[1][4] RSC's May 2024 post describes Greek heirlooms such as Kalamata Red as THC-dominant across the population.[2]

RSC lists hashy, herbal and citrus aromas.[1]
Effects
RSC describes a euphoric and stimulating effect and says the line is renowned for euphoric, creative and "psychedelic" effects.[1]
