Sheberghan General Population 2018 is a landrace cannabis accession from Sheberghan, in Jowzjan Province of northern Afghanistan, listed as Sheberghan in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC describes it as an Indica landrace of the 2018 harvest, obtained from skilled charas farmers in a renowned centre of charas production.[1] RSC now sells a reproduction of it, grown outside Afghanistan, which is recorded at 2018 RSC Sheberghan Reproduction.[1]

Geography

RSC gives a latitude of 37° N. It calls Sheberghan an ethnically Uzbek region and links it with the old centres of cannabis culture to its north around Bukhara.[1]

History

RSC writes that cannabis crops in Sheberghan were documented as early as 1924 by the Russian botanist and geneticist Nikolai Vavilov, who noted that they were of the same type as the cannabis grown far to the north in the desert around Bukhara.[1] The listing's earliest archived version, of August 2019, carried images of Vavilov's account of his 1924 expedition to Afghanistan and of a map of the regions it covered, with Sheberghan marked.[2]

Collection Details

The listing gives the sourcing as "Landrace Genetics, Jowzjan Province, Northern Afghanistan, 2018 Harvest"; its earliest archived version, of August 2019, read "Sourced by Landrace Genetics in Jowzjan Province, northern Afghanistan (2018)".[1][2] It says the seed was obtained directly from skilled charas farmers through an Afghan charas smuggler.[1]

The listing sold seed of this collection until 2023. Since October 2023 it has noted that the seed on sale is from an ex situ maintenance grow using open pollination, dated August 2023.[3]

Cultivation Details

RSC gives the purpose as charas (sieved resin) and the harvest as October, and writes that in the region the harvest runs from October to early December, the farmers leaving their crops late, well into senescence, which is believed to give the finest resin.[1]

Botanical Characteristics

RSC describes the landrace as large-leaved, resinous, compact and heavily branched, as is typical of northern Afghan strains, with broad to medium-width leaflets, a height of about 2 metres, and intense aromas of citrus, fruit and hash. It considers that the accession appears to be Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. afghanica, and expects chemotypes from THC- to CBD-dominant, with other cannabinoids such as THCV.[1] The listing describes the plants of the reproduction RSC now sells; its description has kept the same terms since 2019.[2]
