Phop Phra is a cannabis growing area in Phop Phra District, Tak Province, in the Western Thailand growing region. Hmong farmers in Khiri Rat subdistrict grow hemp for cloth; 326 were registered as hemp growers in 2021 and 2022.[1]
Geography
The hemp growing is reported from Khiri Rat subdistrict; a study of Hmong hemp work there names the villages of Pa Kha Mai, Pa Kha Kao and Chiba Bo.[2] A Kasetsart University collection of hemp seed, gathered from sites known for growing fibre and textile hemp, includes accessions from Khiri Rat, Phop Phra and Chong Khaep.[3][4] Phop Phra was the one district of Tak among the 15 districts in six provinces opened to hemp under the 2016 ministerial regulation.[5]
The Hmong of Khiri Rat came from Omkoi District in Chiang Mai. The Highland Research and Development Institute dates the move to 1925, with settlement at Ban Pa Kha by 1953 and the founding of Khiri Rat subdistrict in 1965.[6] Phrommatham and colleagues (2026) date it to 1943.[1]
Cultivation
In January 2018 a researcher of the Highland Research and Development Institute said that hemp grown by villagers from their own traditional seed was found mostly in Hmong villages, especially in Phop Phra, where it was grown to weave cloth for daily use.[7] Phrommatham and colleagues write that hemp has been grown by Hmong farmers in Thailand from the past to the present, notably in Khiri Rat. They surveyed 180 of the 326 Hmong farmers registered as hemp growers with the district agricultural office between February 2021 and June 2022.[1]
At Ban Pa Kha Mai a group formed in 2020 brought together 25 people who grow the plant, prepare the fibre and weave.[8] The Highland Research and Development Institute lists hemp embroidery and weaving groups at Ban Pa Kha and Ban Mai Yot Khiri.[6] Wongvilarat (2025) calls hemp a sacred plant whose cultivation and use span the whole Hmong life cycle.[2]
