Pavlov 9 is a herbarium accession of cannabis gathered in a jida wood on the left bank of the Kaskelen at its mouth, in the settlement of Iliysk in the Alma-Ata Oblast, today's Almaty Region, Kazakhstan, on 5 September 1943 by N. V. Pavlov, who determined it as Cannabis ruderalis Janisch. The Moscow University Herbarium holds two sheets, MW0818728[1] and MW0818729.[2] Iliysk now lies under the Kapchagay reservoir.
Collection and locality
The first sheet carries the printed label of the herbarium of the Botanical Sector of the Kazakh Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, completed in violet ink Cannabis ruderalis Janisch., Алмаатинская обл., в джидовом лесу по левому берегу р. Каскеленки при устье ее в пос. Илийском. (Alma-Ata Oblast, in a jida wood on the left bank of the river Kaskelenka at its mouth, in the settlement of Iliysk), 5/IX 43 and № 9, and signed Leg. and Teste (collected; vouched for) by Н. В. Павлов.[3] The second carries a label of the Moscow University herbarium with the same text abbreviated and without the number, each line struck through.[4] The catalogue gives the collector, the date, the place and, for the first sheet, the number.[1][2] Jida is the oleaster, Elaeagnus. The settlement of Ili, the former Iliysk, was flooded when the Ili was dammed, and went under the reservoir in the spring of 1970; its people were moved to the new town of Novoiliysk, today's Konaev.
Specimen and identification
The first sheet carries several branched, leafy stems; the second, one slender branched stem.[3][4] Pavlov named the plant Cannabis ruderalis Janisch. on both labels. Each sheet carries two typed slips: an earlier one numbered RB 180 that names the plant Cannabis sativa L., in the form of E. Small's annotation of 1 September 1974, and his slip of August 1975, which names the plant on the first sheet Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav. and on the second Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa.[3][4] The catalogue files both sheets as Cannabis sativa L. and gives Small's 1975 determination.[1][2]
