Pakke-Kessang is a cannabis growing area in Pakke-Kessang District of Arunachal Pradesh, in north-east India. In April 2026 a joint team of police, forest officials and local people destroyed cannabis over 20,000 square metres near Sede Natung village, under the Lemmi police station. The Arunachal Times called the plants "wild cannabis plants"; the Press Trust of India wrote that "illegal cannabis cultivation" had been destroyed.[1][2] It is a growing area of the Eastern Himalayas growing region.
Geography
Pakke-Kessang was carved out of East Kameng District and became the state's 25th district when it was inaugurated in December 2018.[3] At its creation it comprised five administrative circles, Pakke-Kessang, Seijosa, Pijeriang, Passa Valley and Dissing-Passo, with its headquarters at Lemmi.[4]
The Seijosa circle lies at about 300 to 550 metres, in tropical evergreen forest; the Nyishi are its main community.[5]
Traditional use
In 2018–2019 Acharya Balkrishna and colleagues recorded the plants that the people of the Seijosa circle use, 365 species in all. Their list includes cannabis, entered as a shrub, with the whole plant used in medicine.[5]
The 2026 operation
The April 2026 operation near Sede Natung followed information that reached the police on the night of 7 April; the plants were uprooted, cut and burnt on the spot.[1][2] The Arunachal Times, reporting the same operation, gave the superintendent of police, Swati Singh, as saying that the police had received information about "large-scale wild cannabis cultivation" under the Lemmi police station.[1] In both reports she said that such operations would continue, to curb the illegal cultivation of narcotic plants in the district.[2][1]
