Discussion

Why the area is on the map

  • Arunachal Observer, from the Press Trust of India (10 April 2026): "Illegal cannabis cultivation spread over 20,000 sq m was destroyed in Pakke Kessang district", near Sede Natung village in the Lemmi police station area; the superintendent of police spoke of curbing "the illegal cultivation of narcotic plants in the district".
  • Balkrishna and colleagues (2022), working in the Seijosa circle in 2018–2019, list Cannabis sativa among the plants used there: "Shrub", whole plant, "Medicinal". They do not say whether the plants are wild or grown, or which village they come from.
  • The sources report by district and circle and name no larger tract, so the district is the unit. Balkrishna and colleagues credit the uses to the circle's people as a whole and name the Nyishi only as its main community; the paper's population figure of over 10,000 may refer to the Nyishi or to Seijosa, so the article leaves it out.
  • The infobox coordinates are the centre of the bordered district. The area is a short one: it rests on one operation and one plant survey.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is a proxy: Pakke-Kessang District, formed out of East Kameng District in December 2018 (Pakke-Kessang, Seijosa, Pijeriang, Passa Valley and Dissing-Passo circles), from the OpenStreetMap administrative relation for the district. It is clipped at the outline of the Eastern Himalayas region (ground at or above 200 m), which leaves out about 84 km² of the lowest ground on the Assam border; Seijosa and Lemmi stay inside. The outline measures about 1,800 km², the figure in the infobox.

Growing status

The status is Active: cannabis was destroyed in the district in April 2026, reported by the Press Trust of India as cultivation, and the plant was in use in the Seijosa circle in 2018–2019.

Where the sources disagree

  • Wild or grown at Sede Natung. The Press Trust of India report calls the April 2026 site "illegal cannabis cultivation". The Arunachal Times (9 April 2026), reporting the same operation, calls the plants "wild cannabis plants" and gives the superintendent's information as "large-scale wild cannabis cultivation". The article gives both, in the lead and in the body, and does not decide between them.

Sources not used

  • About 12 acres of wild cannabis destroyed near Sede village in June 2022 by the police of East Kameng and Pakke-Kessang (The Arunachal Times and Arunachal Observer, 10 June 2022). The Observer places Sede in East Kameng district and the stand on the border of the two districts, so the site may lie outside this area; no use of the plants is reported.
  • The Assam Tribune's report of the district's inauguration carries a page date of 2010, an archive artefact; its text is dated "Dec 15" and describes the December 2018 inauguration that EastMojo reports. It is cited without a date.
