The Lapas population is the cannabis of Lapas village and its fields in the Lapas appellation, in the Parvati Valley growing area of Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh, India. The village lies on a south-facing slope below Sargi Top at about 2,500 m. Its fields begin above it at 2,600 m and run round the southern and eastern flanks of the mountain to Gunguni Dhar at 3,500 m.[1] The Zomia Collective's collection documentation groups Lapas with the valley of Bareonah to its north and classes their cannabis as an open-pollinated landrace population grown for charas.[1]

Accessions

Nine accessions were collected at Lapas under the expedition code HIMA01 and one under HIM25 on 29 October 2025. The HIMA01 collections include the village's general population, selections from the Upper, Sargi Top and Bareonah fields, two selections from one grower's fields and three feral selections.

Changes in cultivation

A 2023 post by the collector describes cultivation at Lapas expanding with the demand for charas that followed the rise of tourism in the 1960s. Domesticated fields have gained ground over feral plants, and crop rotation and planting with legumes have given way to more intensive farming. The post reports heavy use of synthetic fertiliser and pesticide, made cheaper since a road reached the village, and fields moved higher into the forest after each eradication.[2] The collection documentation calls the Lapas and Bareonah population endangered by tourism and hybridisation.[1]
