La Paz is a cannabis appellation in the Serranía del Perijá growing area, covering the part of the municipality of La Paz on the range, in the department of Cesar, Colombia.
Geography
The appellation is the municipality's land at or above 200 m, on the Colombian side of the Serranía del Perijá. The town of La Paz stands below that line, in the valley, outside the appellation. The corregimiento (rural division) of San José de Oriente lies inside the appellation. The appellation adjoins the Agustín Codazzi appellation to the south.
History
San José de Oriente, called La Boca until 1957, was settled by Liberal families who left Ocaña, Ábrego and El Carmen in 1949 to escape the violence between Liberals and Conservatives. In the 1970s, during the bonanza marimbera, disputes over land to plant marijuana brought armed groups, among them Los Arrebatos and Los Ladrillos, to the corregimiento.[1]
The six reserves of the Yukpa lie in the municipalities of La Paz, Agustín Codazzi and Becerril. The marijuana boom of the 1970s brought a new wave of migration to the region, accompanied by violence over control of the smuggling routes.[2]
Since 2000
Between July 2008 and April 2018 about 30 hectares of marijuana were eradicated in La Paz, in 18 entries of the Ministry of Defence's open data.[3]
