Agustín Codazzi is a cannabis appellation in the Serranía del Perijá growing area, covering the part of the municipality of Agustín Codazzi on the range, in the department of Cesar, Colombia.
Geography
The appellation is the municipality's land at or above 200 m, on the Colombian side of the Serranía del Perijá. The town of Agustín Codazzi stands below that line, in the valley, outside the appellation. The appellation adjoins the La Paz appellation to the north and the Becerril appellation to the south.
History
In July 1977, during the bonanza marimbera, the newspaper Diario del Norte reported that police and F-2 agents, in an operation from the air, had seized 380,000 marijuana plants growing on ten hectares in the vereda (rural district) of San Jenaro, which the report placed in the corregimiento of Becerril, municipality of Codazzi. They detained fifteen workers who looked after the crop.[1]: 98
The six reserves of the Yukpa lie in the municipalities of La Paz, Agustín Codazzi and Becerril. The spread of the cotton plantations in the late 1960s pushed the Yukpa higher into the mountains, and the marijuana boom of the 1970s brought a new wave of migration to the region, accompanied by violence over control of the smuggling routes.[2]
Since 2000
Between October 2007 and July 2020 about 38 hectares of marijuana were eradicated in Agustín Codazzi, in 23 entries of the Ministry of Defence's open data.[3]
