Koelz 1666 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected by Walter Koelz beside a road at Keshapur, in the historical Punjab region of India, on 7 March 1931. The New York Botanical Garden holds the sheet as catalogue 1414440.[1] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 1927776378.[2]
Collection and locality
Koelz's Roerich Museum field label records Keshapur, a roadside habitat and an altitude of about 1,000 feet.[3] The altitude converts to approximately 305 m. The label is headed Flora of Punjab, and the specimen databases place Keshapur in Punjab.[3][2]
Field observations
The label describes a three-foot plant with green flowers.[3]
Specimen and identification
In August 1975, Ernest Small determined the specimen as Cannabis sativa var. kafiristanica (Vavilov) E.Small & Cronquist, the name under which GBIF publishes the occurrence.[3][2] Small and Arthur Cronquist subsequently cited Keshapur, Punjab, Koelz 1666 (NY) among the representative specimens for that variety. Their treatment grouped the variety with indigenous, weedy and naturalized plants, while recognizing that those histories cannot always be distinguished from morphology alone.[4] A pencil note on the sheet reads teratological flowers![3]
Sequence data
Leaflets from this sheet were sampled for DNA by a herbarium-genomics project coordinated by Christopher J. Grassa of Harvard University, and the sample was sequenced by Marco Todesco at the University of British Columbia. The European Nucleotide Archive made it public as BioSample SAMEA112688680 on 24 February 2025; it gives the voucher as NY:1414440, this sheet, and the tissue as Leaflets removed from original specimen voucher.[5]
The sample belongs to the archive's project DNA sequencing of Cannabis specimens accessioned in herbarium NY, one of a set organised under an umbrella project called Population Dynamics in Cannabaceae.[6] Two whole-genome sequencing runs from it, made on an Illumina NovaSeq 6000, were released on 20 April 2025.[7][8]
