Kae rok chit (ยาแก้โรคจิต) is a powdered medicine of Thai traditional medicine of fourteen drugs, among them the stalk of cannabis,[1]: 176 given to bring sleep.[2]: 334 In the Thai texts rok chit is a disorder of wind that brings worry, strain and sleeplessness, not the psychiatric illness the modern Thai word names.[1]: 176–177 Vichai Chokevivat traces the formula to the second volume of the Ayurvedsueksa of Khun Nitthet Sukkhakit, printed in 1973.[2]: 334, 340 It was one of the 16 cannabis formulas that the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine named in January 2019 for use once the narcotics law allowed it.[3]
Yingsak Jittakoat quotes it as recipe 1483 of that volume, the first of its formulas of the name: two baht of the bark of kum nam, six of the bark of moringa, and one baht each of eleven drugs, among them cannabis stalk (ก้านกัญชา) and boraphet; to these is added rayom equal in weight to all the rest. The powder is dissolved in hot water with borneol camphor. The first dose is two phai, raised to one salueng if the patient still cannot sleep.[1]: 176 The rayom must first be treated to take away its strength.[1]: 177
In a study Jittakoat reported in 2021, it was given in a health drink to 27 of 54 hospital patients with depression or anxiety.[1]: 173 Thai Post reported on 16 February 2021 that the Minister of Public Health had signed a notification taking five formulas made with cannabis leaf or stalk, Kae rok chit among them, off the list of narcotic formulas.[4]
