Bel'chikova s.n. is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered on a weedy fallow near the village of Kosaya Gora, in the Ural Oblast of the Russian SFSR, Russia, on 30 August 1931 by Bel'chikova. The Moscow University Herbarium holds the sheet as MW0818720.[1] The district the labels name is not clearly legible, and the village has not been placed.
Collection and locality
The sheet carries two labels in two hands. The first, in violet ink, reads Уральская область (Ural Oblast), the name of a district, Cannabis sativa L., Бурьянная залежь около д. „Косая гора". (a weedy fallow near the village of Kosaya Gora), 30/VIII 31 and Бельчикова (Bel'chikova). The second, in pencil, repeats the oblast, the habitat, the village and the date, names an agricultural combine (С-Х комбинат) after the same district, and is signed with a name beginning Старк….[2] The catalogue gives the collector as Bel'chikova (Starkova) and the date, with no locality, and files the sheet under Kazakhstan.[1] In 1931 the Ural Oblast was a province of the Russian SFSR, centred on Sverdlovsk, and not a unit of the Kazak ASSR.
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a dense leafy top and long bare pieces of stem, and an empty envelope at the top left.[2] The first label names the plant Cannabis sativa L. without a determiner. A typed slip gives the redetermination of the sheet by E. Small of Canada Agriculture in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa L., the name under which the catalogue files it.[2][1]
