Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The labels place a cannabis plant on a weedy fallow near a village of the 1931 Ural Oblast, and one of them names an agricultural combine. They give no use. The accession is classified Feral because the label places the plant on fallow ground, land that had been under crops; the label does not say whether hemp had been grown there, and a single gathering does not establish a feral population. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3518 × 5193 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.
- First label (violet ink, under the herbarium's stamp). Уральская област[ь]. / Киз[и/е]ловский район. / Cannabis sativa L. (underlined) / Бурьянная залежь / около д. „Косая гора". / 30/VIII 31 / Бельчикова.
- Second label (pencil, on a separate paper). Урал. область / Киз[и/е]ловский С-Х комбинат / Бурьянная залежь / Около д. Косая гор[а] / 30/VIII-31 г. / Старк… (read Старкова once).
- Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
- Readings that differ. The district, on both labels, was read Кизиловский and Кизеловский; one letter is not agreed. The second signature was read Старкова and Старк….
- Signatures. The labels are signed Бельчикова and Старк… in two hands. Whether they are two people or one person under two names, as the catalogue's Bel'chikova (Starkova) may mean, the sheet does not say.
- The stamped number 64793 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The labels name the Ural Oblast of 1931, a district read as Кизиловский or Кизеловский, and the village of Kosaya Gora; the district's name decides between two places some 700 km apart.
- Кизеловский would be the Kizel district (Kizelovsky raion) around the town of Kizel, in today's Perm Krai. The Russian Wikipedia says it was formed on 24 February 1924, came directly under the Ural Oblast, and was abolished on 10 June 1931, before the date on the labels. A locality named Kosaya Gora is in OpenStreetMap 7.7 km west-north-west of Kizel (node 9979643011), the only place of that name found between 51° and 60.5° N and 53° and 66° E.
- Кизиловский is close to Kizilsky raion, in today's Chelyabinsk Oblast, formed in 1926 and described by the Russian Wikipedia as agricultural, which suits a fallow and an agricultural combine; no Kosaya Gora was found there in OpenStreetMap, which may omit a small or vanished village.
Neither can be chosen on the labels' evidence, so no point is taken and no province is entered. The country rests on the oblast: in 1931 the Ural Oblast lay in the Russian SFSR, and both candidate districts lie in Russia today.
Editorial treatment
Country. The herbarium files the sheet under Kazakhstan. The labels' Уральская область of 1931 is the Russian SFSR's Ural Oblast (1923 to 1934), and the country field takes Russia.
Classification. Both labels call the habitat a бурьянная залежь, a fallow overgrown with tall weeds: land that had been under crops and was resting. The accession is classified Feral on that ground; the labels do not say whether hemp had been grown there.
Collector. The catalogue gives the collector as Bel'chikova (Starkova). The collector field takes Bel'chikova, the name signed on the first label, which carries the herbarium's stamp; the second signature is reported in the article. No source read gives a full name, and none is linked.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue files the sheet under Kazakhstan; the labels name the Ural Oblast of the Russian SFSR (see Editorial treatment).
- The catalogue gives no locality; the labels name the village of Kosaya Gora.
