Anon. s.n., Lào Cai is an accession of hemp fibre labelled as coming from Lao Kay, in Tonkin, northern Vietnam. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds the sample as P00727703.[1] Its tag names no collector and gives a month, July, but no year.
The sample and its tag
The museum's photograph shows a long hank of pale, coarse fibre, bound round near each end, beside a colour chart and a scale bar.[2] A cloth tag tied to it is typed in French. Its first line reads Gai dâ, broken off by a tear, and then chanvre canmabis gigantea (hemp, Cannabis gigantea). The next lines read Tonkin: Lao kay and Juillet (July). The tag then gives a weight, Livre indigène 600 grammes (a local pound of 600 grams), and a value line, Valeur: 0 20 à 2,fr., whose last figures are struck through in ink; 0,54 is written in ink above it. The last two lines are torn at both ends: Confection des vêtem (making of clothes) and èce cultiv, which the museum's label gives in full as Espèce cultivée (cultivated species).[2]
The museum's label repeats the tag by hand: Cannabis gigantea, Chanvre (hemp), Gai dâ[illisible], Tonkin : Lao kay, Juillet, Confection des vêtements and Espèce cultivée.[2]
Collection and locality
The catalogue gives the locality as Lao kay, the country as Vietnam and the collector as s.c. (no collector named), with no date.[1] Lao Kay is the French spelling of Lào Cai, the name of a town on the Red River and of the province around it, today Lào Cai Province. In 1913 the label of Chevalier 29457 (1913) placed Cha-pa in the Province de Lao-Kay. The tag does not say whether it means the town or the province.
Specimen and identification
The catalogue names the sample Cannabis gigantea Crevost.[1] The tag and the museum's label give the name without an author.[2] GBIF matches the name to Cannabis sativa subsp. sativa.[1]
