Abdel Rahim Abdel Zahir s.n. is a reproduction accession of Cannabis sativa grown from seed sent from the botanic garden at Sibpur, Calcutta, today the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden in India. It is known from three herbarium sheets that Abdel Rahim Abdel Zahir gathered on 3 July 1934 at the Horticultural Section of the Ministry of Agriculture at Giza, Egypt. Meise Botanic Garden holds them as BR0000023200449, BR0000023200463 and BR0000023200456.[1][2][3][4]
Seed lot
The three labels' remarks read Seeds were received from the Botanic Gardens, Sibpur, Calcutta in May 10th., 1934, or the same words without were.[5][6][7] They do not say where the garden's seed came from.
Grow-out
The labels are typed forms of the Ministry of Agriculture, Horticultural Section, Herbarium. They give the locality Horticultural Section, Giza., the collector Abdel Rahim Abdel Zahir Eff. and the date 3. 7. 1934, for both the gathering and the identification. The habitat line reads As. Centr.; Himal. Bor. occ. (Central Asia; the western north Himalaya), which is the range of the species. Two labels give the English name Hemp. and the third Hashish.; all three give the Arabic name as Hashish.[5][6][7] Meise's catalogue gives the same collector, place and date, and files the sheets under Egypt.[2]
Specimens and identification
BR0000023200449 is a printed Flora Egyptiaca sheet of the Horticultural Section, with a leafy top bearing long, narrow leaflets; the others hold two leafy shoots and one slender shoot.[5][6][7] The labels name the plant Cannabis sativa, L., in the order Moraceae, and Meise files it as Cannabis sativa L.[2] A slip on BR0000023200449 records that stem tissue was removed for DNA on 3 July 2018 by Christopher J.
