Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The plants were raised at Giza from seed a botanic garden sent from Calcutta. The page records a grow-out of that seed, not a population of Egypt or of India. The labels do not say where the garden's seed came from, so the accession is classified Unknown. An earlier version of this note gave it no class. The labels do not say where the garden's seed came from. No conservation priority is assigned.

Lineage

The accession is a reproduction: plants grown away from their seed's source. Seed source: the botanic garden at Sibpur, Calcutta (today the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden), which sent the seed on 10 May 1934. Grow-out: the Horticultural Section of the Ministry of Agriculture at Giza, where the plants were gathered on 3 July 1934. No earlier accession of that seed is known, so the page has no parent.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from Meise's images of the three sheets (5755 × 8025 pixels each); the page states only what the two readings agree.

  • All three labels: printed MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE. / HORTICULTURAL SECTION. / HERBARIUM. / AGR. 38 HORT. / typed Cannabis sativa, L. / MORACEAE. / Hashish. (Arabic name) / Horticultural Section, Giza. / As. Centr.; Himal. Bor. occ. / Abdel Rahim Abdel Zahir Eff. / 3. 7. 1934 (date and identification).
  • English name: Hemp. on BR0000023200449 and BR0000023200463; Hashish. on BR0000023200456.
  • Remarks: BR0000023200449 Seeds were received from the Botanic Gardens, Sibpur, Calcutta in May 10th., 1934; BR0000023200463 Seeds received from the Botanic Garden Gardens, Sibpur, Calcutta in May 10th., 1934; BR0000023200456 Seeds received from the Botanic Gardens, Sibpur, Calcutta in May 10th. 1934.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The plants were raised from seed at the Horticultural Section in Giza, so a point there would mark the grow-out, not the seed's source; the source is a botanic garden whose own seed is of unrecorded origin.

Editorial treatment

Three sheets, one accession. The three sheets carry the same date, place, collector and seed note; they are one grow-out.

Country. The country is the seed's recorded origin, India, as for other plants grown from seed sent from elsewhere. Meise files the sheets under Egypt, where they were grown.

Collector. The labels give Abdel Rahim Abdel Zahir Eff.; Eff. (effendi) is a title, and the collector field leaves it out. The page does not divide the name into given name and surname.

Garden. The labels' botanic garden at Sibpur, Calcutta, is the garden now called the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, in Shibpur, Howrah (English Wikipedia).

Source discrepancies

  • Meise files the three sheets under Egypt, where the plants were grown; the page enters the seed's origin, India.

These notes were recorded during accession preparation. Source citations remain in the article. Éloise 00:23, 17 October 2026 (+07)
