Thalpathe Piliyam
The Thalpathe Piliyam (තල්පත් පිළියම්, "Palm-leaf Remedies") is a twenty-one-volume compilation of traditional medical formulae published by the Department of Ayurveda of the Government of Sri Lanka, beginning in 1992. The series transcribes and organises drug formulations recorded on ola leaf (palm-leaf) manuscripts donated by families of traditional medicine practitioners. Twenty volumes are in Sinhala; the twenty-first is in Tamil. The first volume was published with financial and technical support from the World Health Organization.
The series is the largest published collection of Sri Lankan indigenous medical formulae and contains at least 267 formulations that include Cannabis sativa as a measured ingredient, with a further 13 using it as a grinding medium. These formulations treat conditions across the gastrointestinal, nervous, circulatory, reproductive and respiratory systems, prepared most commonly as pills (guli), pastes (kalka) and decoctions (kashaya). Cannabis is used at low concentrations: 63% of formulations contain 5% or less by ingredient weight. read more →

Featured Varieties
🟡 Vulnerable • Northeastern Thailand (Isan) & Southern Laos
Legendary landrace sativa known to many as 'Thai Sticks', grown by Lao people in both Laos and Thailand as well as by other minority groups. Famed for soaring cerebral effects and traditional bamboo stick curing. Facing extreme pressure from hybrid contamination and changing cultivation practices.
🟠 Endangered • Northern Afghanistan
Heavy indica from Afghanistan's historic hash-making region. Dense, resinous buds with sedating effects. Population declining due to ongoing regional conflicts and security issues.
🔴 Critical • Himachal Pradesh, India
Sacred variety from the isolated village of Malana, traditionally used for high-grade charas production. Facing extinction from tourism pressure and commercialization.
We are witnessing the rapid disappearance of traditional cultivation knowledge and genetic diversity in cannabis. These landrace populations represent thousands of years of natural and human selection, containing unique genetic traits and chemical profiles. Systematic documentation and conservation efforts can serve as a bridge—preserving irreplaceable genetic heritage while supporting traditional communities and advancing our understanding of this remarkable plant.
