Khun Aek Farm General Population 2024 is a domesticate landrace cannabis accession collected by Isabella of the Zomia Collective in Sakhon Nakhon Province, Thailand.
Geography
Ban Nan Toeng is located in Phu Phan District, Sakhon Nakhon Province, Thailand, within the Phu Phan landrace cannabis growing area of the Northeastern Thailand growing region.
Khun Aek's farm sits on the edge of the Kut Bak plateau within the Phu Phan Mountains and the larger Khorat Plateau.
The region has a warm, dry climate with fertile soils and an average elevation of around 200 metres.
Collection Details
This accession was collected and documented by Isabella in January 2025. A total of 135 grams of seeds were sourced from Khun Aek and other local cultivators around Ban Nan Toeng.
This accession is a general population sample, drawn from across the plots cultivated by Khun Aek during the 2024 growing season.
The seeds come from an autochthonous, cultivated landrace cannabis population of 1000+ plants grown by Khun Aek near Ban Nan Toeng village.
Cultivation Details
Khun Aek cultivates cannabis within a larger context of widespread regional cultivation. Cultivation is currently done under license from the Thai government, following legalisation in 2022.
The plants are grown within a poly-culture system, mono-cropped in fields and rotated across seasons, alongside the diverse mix of crops typical of the Phu Phan Mountains region.
Males are heavily culled and the population is subject to ongoing mass selection. Pollen comes primarily from monoecious individuals within the population.
The plants are grown according to the monsoons, seeking to avoid flowering during periods of excessive humidity.
Indoors, the plants are estimated to flower within 20–24 weeks.
Botanical Characteristics
The plants are tall, with most between two and three metres in height.
In terms of morphology, the plants exhibit natural apical dominance and grow in a classic 'christmas tree' pattern. The leaf shape is narrow, slender and long with up to 9 leaflets or more. Serration is shallow.
The foliage runs light green with darker greens emerging on mature growth, while the stems hold a consistent light green. Stigmas dry to brown hairs.
The dried flowers from this accession were processed as ganja, with whole branches dried and cured in semi-darkness in outdoor sheds before being bagged and stored. Flower structure varies across the population, ranging from foxtailed to airy colas, reflecting the diversity of phenotypes maintained on the farm.
Two primary expressions are present in the population:
- Tiger Tail (Hang Suea): robust structure with thick colas and strong branching.
- Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok): more delicate, foxtailing colas with sweet, floral, tropical fruit aromas.
Aroma
Sweet and floral, with tropical fruit and mango notes over a subtle herbal base.
Effects
The general population produces clean, stimulating psychoactive effects characteristic of the Lao-Isan genepool.
Conservation Status
The accession is recorded at medium conservation priority. Cultivation remains active in the area within a legal framework, and introgression at this site is judged to be minimal. Pressure on traditional landraces persists across the wider region, driven by the spread of modern hybrids and farm-gate pricing that favours imported genetics.
