Yao 4477 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected in Sichuan, China, on 8 May 1939 by 姚仲吾 (Yao Zhongwu). The Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing holds the sheet as PE 00578014[1].
Collection and locality
A handwritten slip at the foot of the sheet, on a printed label of the herbarium of the Biological Laboratory of the Science Society of China, Nanking, gives a place and a note in cursive characters, of which only the first two, 四川 (Szechwan), were read with confidence; then the collector 姚仲吾, the number 4477 and the date 1939年5月8日 (8 May 1939). Two tags carry the number in pencil, one with initials read as C. W. Yao, with doubt.[2] The catalogue gives the collector, the number, the year and Sichuan.[1]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a thick rooted stem and male flowering panicles, mounted on reused printed paper. A slip names the plant Cannabis sativa Linn., determined by Y. Liu in 1954.[2] The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its sheet images under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0); they are read and cited here, not reproduced.
