Warrington s.n., Calcutta is an accession of ganja: a dried fruiting head of Cannabis sativa labelled Gunjah, pr. Calcutta and presented by a Mr Warrington. The Swedish Museum of Natural History holds it as S09-4661 and catalogues it under India and West Bengal. It is undated.[1][2]
The label
The museum's catalogue transcribes two lines: Gunjah, pr. Calcutta and, in Swedish, Torkat örtstånd, pres. af Mr. Warrington. The second describes the material as dried (torkat) and says that Mr Warrington presented it (pres. af).[1] The label names Calcutta but does not say whether the plants were grown there, and the abbreviation pr. before the name is not expanded. The catalogue's English note describes the object as an infrutescence, a fruiting head, and it gives no collector, number or date.[1]
Gunjah
Gunjah is the spelling of ganja in the Pharmacopoeia of India of 1868, which lists it first of the three forms in which, it says, Indian hemp was met with in India: the dried flowering plant from which the resin has not been removed.[3]
The museum holds a second sample under Warrington's name, Warrington s.n., Ostindien (s.d.), of leaves and capsules labelled Bang l. Subjee.
