EBC 43417 is an artefact catalogued in the Economic Botany Collection of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: hemp fibre and cloth from Korea, held under one catalogue number, which Kew files under the plant name Cannabis sativa.[1] W. R. Carles, who served as British vice-consul in Korea, gave it to Kew in November 1885.[2]
The catalogue entry
The catalogue gives the artefact name and the parts held as Fibre (& cloth) of hemp, the plant name as 153.04 CANNABACEAE Cannabis sativa, the use as MATERIALS - Fibres with the user Man, and the storage as Bottles, boxes etc. Its country, region and geography description all read North Korea. The entry book number is 124.1885, the donor Carles WR and the donor date 24/11/1885, 24 November 1885. The donor number, collector, collector's number and collection date fields are blank.[1]
Kew's help page defines the entry book number as a number given to each group of specimens at the point of acquisition, in a series that runs each year. It says the database was compiled in the 1980s using only the information present with each specimen, and that country names which have changed since then may not have been updated.[3] Kew also publishes the entry to GBIF, with the locality North Korea.[4]
The object
The entry names two parts under one number, fibre and cloth of hemp, and describes neither. No image of the object is published.
