Template:Infobox Archaeological site/doc

Template page

An infobox for an archaeological site where cannabis has been found: a cemetery, burial mound, settlement, cave or shrine where cannabis remains, residue, fibre or impressions are identified in a published paper. It is used on the article about the site itself. Every page that carries it is placed in Category:Archaeological sites and listed among the places of the wiki, with the place type Archaeological site.

One page describes one site, not one excavation season or one grave: a grave with cannabis in it is a section of the site's article. Lake and bog cores with cannabis pollen are not sites and do not carry this infobox.

On the page, the infobox comes first and {{History series}} after it. The site's image goes in the infobox, not in the series box.

Leave a field empty rather than guess it. Every value must come from a source the article cites, and where a value is an interpretation (an assigned culture, a contested date) the article says whose it is.

Parameters

Parameter Description
name The site's name. Defaults to the page title
local_name The name in the local language and script. Shown under the title
other_names Other names the site is known by. Shown under the title
image Filename of an image of the site or its finds, without File:
image_alt Alternative text for the image. Defaults to the caption, then to the name
image_caption Caption for the image
show_map yes shows a small terrain map centred on coordinates
coordinates Latitude and longitude in decimal degrees, separated by a comma, as the excavation or dating paper publishes them. Only where a paper publishes them; leave empty otherwise. The template rounds them to two decimal places (about 1 km) for display, the map and the stored value. Any other form (degrees and minutes, N/E letters) shows an error in the box and is not stored
country Bare title of the country page, with no link markup: the template makes the link
provinces Bare titles of the province or state pages, separated by commas. Each is linked
admin_2 The district, county or prefecture. Shown as written, so a link may be added by hand (to an article, or to Wikipedia where the wiki has no page); stored as plain text
admin_2_label The label for admin_2. Defaults to District
minimum_elevation, maximum_elevation Elevation in metres, as plain numbers with no unit or comma. Give both for a site that spans a height range, or only maximum_elevation for one height
growing_region Bare title of the growing region page where the site lies within one. Linked
site_type One of: Cemetery, Burial mound, Settlement, Cave or rock shelter, Shrine or temple, Shell midden. Any other value raises a warning on the page and is not stored; see Property:Has site type
culture The archaeological culture the site is assigned to, as the sources name it. Several are separated by semicolons. A link may be added by hand; the value is stored without it
period The period as the sources name it (Early Iron Age). Stored as plain text
in_use The span of use of the whole site, in words (c. 1260–48 BCE). Display only
excavated The years of excavation, in words. Display only
excavators Who excavated the site: people or institutions, linked by hand where the wiki has a page. Display only
cannabis_finds What kind of cannabis material was found, separated by semicolons: Seeds, Plant remains, Residue, Fibre or textile, Pollen, Impressions. See Property:Has cannabis find
finds_note One short line on the finds, as the article states them. Display only
finds_from, finds_to The date range of the cannabis finds (not of the whole site), as whole years. Years BCE are negative: -700 is 700 BCE. A date in years before present is converted first: BP counts back from 1950, so 2700 BP is -750. Give one of the two for a single date. Shown as c. 700–500 BCE and stored as numbers, so sites sort by date. Words, ranges or c. in these fields raise a warning and are not stored
dating_method How the finds were dated, separated by semicolons: Radiocarbon, Dendrochronology, Luminescence, Typology, Stratigraphy, Inscriptions. See Property:Has dating method
analyses How the cannabis was identified, separated by semicolons: Morphology, Microscopy, Ancient DNA, Chemical analysis, Pollen analysis. See Property:Has analysis method
disputed yes where a published paper rejects or questions the identification as cannabis. The box then says so, and the article must say who disputes it and why
finds_held The museum or institution that holds the finds. Several are separated by semicolons. A link may be added by hand; the value is stored without it
timeline_label The caption for the page's point on the History map's timeline: what was found, in plain text with no links and at most 60 characters (Burnt cannabis in wooden braziers). It says "earliest" or "first" only where the article says so with a citation, and then as "earliest reported". Defaults to the page title. Not shown in the box. See Property:Has timeline label

Footnotes (<ref>) may be added only to the display-only fields. A footnote in a stored field would be stored with the value.

Categories

Every page is placed in Category:Archaeological sites. It is also placed in the category of each page named in provinces, or, where provinces is empty, in the category of the country.

Semantic properties

The template stores the following properties with #set. The other parameters are display only.

Parameter Property Type
(always) Has place type = Archaeological site Text, fixed values
local_name Has local name Text
image Has image Text
country Has country Page
provinces Has province Page, several values
admin_2 Has admin 2 Page
coordinates (rounded) Has coordinates Geographic coordinates
minimum_elevation, maximum_elevation Has minimum elevation, Has maximum elevation Quantity (m)
growing_region Has growing region Page
site_type Has site type Text, fixed values
culture Has archaeological culture Text, several values
period Has archaeological period Text
finds_from Has find year from Number
finds_to Has find year to Number
dating_method Has dating method Text, fixed values, several
cannabis_finds Has cannabis find Text, fixed values, several
analyses Has analysis method Text, fixed values, several
disputed Has disputed identification Boolean (false when empty)
finds_held Has finds holder Text, several values

The template also copies Has continent and Has subregion from the page named in country, reading that country page's stored values with #show. Nothing needs to be entered for them.

Timeline

The template adds one timeline record to the page: a subobject named timeline, which the History map and timeline read. It is added only when the page has a year to place it at.

Property Value
Has timeline year from, Has timeline year to finds_from and finds_to. Where only one is given, it is both
Has timeline label timeline_label, else the page title
Has timeline kind Archaeological find
Has coordinates coordinates, rounded as above
Has timeline page The page itself

The point is the site's own, so a site without published coordinates is on the timeline without a point.
