Set by the timeline record: the timeline subobject that Template:Infobox Archaeological site, Template:Infobox Historical Source, Template:Infobox Legal Instrument and Template:Infobox trade route add to their pages, which the History map and timeline read. The first year of the event.

A year as a whole number. Years before the Common Era are negative: -1200 is 1200 BCE, and there is no year 0. A date given in years before present is converted to a calendar year first: BP counts back from 1950.

Where the year comes from:

• an archaeological site: finds_from, the earliest date of the cannabis finds;
• a historical source: the year it was written, from composed_date, or from composed where that is a single date; otherwise sort_year; otherwise the year of publication;
• a legal instrument: the year of adopted_date;
• a trade route: period_start, the first year its sources give.

Typed Number, so that records sort and filter by year.
