Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant at Bayankhangai, in Matad sum, in July 1975, with no habitat. It gives no use and no note on cultivation. The determination as Cannabis ruderalis is the botanist's judgement from the specimen and is reported as such. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3701 × 5148 pixels).

  • Printed form of the joint Soviet-Mongolian expedition: Cannabis ruderalis Janisch. / Монгольская Народная Республика / Восточный аймак Матад сомон / Баян-Ханга / Местообитание blank / 1975 № 486 1/VII / Собр. } Опред. } О. В. Журба. Printer's line 1-я ТИН. Зак. 4567-17000. 11/III-71 г.
  • Map. A circled cross east of 115° E at about 47° N, over the printed Buir-nur, in both readings.

Georeferencing

The point 46.8594, 115.2506 is the one the herbarium's database publishes for this sheet. It lies in Matad sum, Dornod, 1.3 km from the track OpenStreetMap names Матад-Баянхангай (way 437803213) and 10.8 km south-south-west of the Matad sum centre (node 2377842881), so it agrees with the label's Bayankhangai. The database states no uncertainty; the figure here covers the stretch of the Bayankhangai track within which the place can lie. SRTM gives 887 m; the label gives no altitude. The cross on the label's map, over Buir Nuur about 200 km to the east, is not taken as a location mark. Basis: holder's georeference. Uncertainty: about 5 km.

Editorial treatment

Place. The label's Баян-Ханга is taken as Bayankhangai, the place OpenStreetMap names on the track south of Matad. A sheet of the Mongolian-German expedition of 1987, held at Gatersleben, names Bajanchangoj about 11 km south-west of the Matad sum centre, very probably the same place.

Collector. As for Zhurba 1855 (1974).

Source discrepancies

  • The database files the sheet as Cannabis sativa L.; the label's determination is Cannabis ruderalis Janisch.
  • The database gives no collector number or locality; the label gives № 486 and Bayankhangai, Matad.
