Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant in a hollow valley in eastern Mongolia in August 1927. It gives no use and no note on cultivation, and the determiner's variety name is Small's of 1975, not the collector's. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the garden's image (2000 × 3000 pixels, through GBIF's image cache).

  • Printed label. Н. Н. ЛЕБЕДЕВ. Почвенный отряд Монгольской Экспедиции Академии Наук. 1927. / № 103/11 / Cannabis sativa L. / Mongolia orientalis. • Stamp. Herb. Inst. Bot. Acad. Sci. U.R.S.S. DUPLA.
  • English slip (by hand). #103/11 Soil Sect. Mong. Exp. Acad. Sci. 1927. Tsentsen-khan, Deriganga and Mergenwen khoshuns. Alkha-khoshun gobi. A hollow valley between two table-lands. Leg. B. Zamatkinov. Det. N. Ikonnikov-Galitzky.
  • Determination slip. Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav., E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
  • A short pencilled word to the left of the printed taxon name was not read.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The label's Alkha-khoshun gobi was searched in Nominatim, restricted to Mongolia, as Алха, Алх хошуу, Alkha, Alkh gobi, Алхайн говь and Алхагобь, without a result, and the label names the place only as a hollow between two heights within three khoshuns. The khoshuns are the banners of the 1920s; the Dariganga of the label may be today's Dariganga sum in Sükhbaatar, but the Tsetsen-khan and Mergen-van banners are not today's units, so no single present-day area can be named. No province is stated, and none is entered.

Editorial treatment

Date. The label's date is written with the month in Roman numerals below the day (15 over VIII) and 27 г.; it is read as 15 August 1927. The catalogue gives only the year.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's B. Zamatkinov (Заматкинов). No source read for this page gives his full name, and none is linked. The expedition is named on the label as N. N. Lebedev's; the page does not place the gathering on a route.

Taxon. The infobox takes the 1975 determination, the latest on the sheet, with its subspecies and variety.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue gives the date as 1927; the label gives 15 August 1927.
  • The catalogue files the sheet as Cannabis sativa var. spontanea Vavilov; the determination slip reads Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav., and the printed label Cannabis sativa L.
  • The catalogue gives no locality; the label names Alkha-khoshun gobi.
