Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The labels place the plants in the environs of Peking between 1926 and 1928. They give no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (PE 00557891, 1,054 × 1,440 pixels; PE 00557892, 1,041 × 1,440 pixels; PE 00761632, 1,038 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Slip (all three sheets; printed 中國科學院植物研究所 / 植物標本室, written in ink): 北京近郊 / 1926–28年採 / 俞德浚先生贈.
  • Typed label (PE 00557891, twice): 探集人名號數年代 Yu, T. T. (1926-28) / 產地 Hopei Peiking / (27) Moraceae / Cannabis sativa Linn. / 定名人 C. S. Chang / 附記 Herb. No. 413346 (the tilted copy overwritten to 413347).
  • Determination slip (all three): Cannabis sativa L., written over the printed heading of the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology's herbarium (showing through from the back), with a signature of three characters that was not read and 1956.
  • Stamps. HOPEI province stamp; stamped numbers 413347, 413345 and 413346.

One reading left the slip's last line uncertain after 俞德浚; the other reads it 先生贈, presented by Mr, which the page follows.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The slips name the environs of Peking, an area with no fixed bounds around the city and larger than a district, and the sheets name no place within it; the period of two or three years leaves open whether the three plants grew at one place. The city's point would stand for none of them. The province field takes Beijing.

Editorial treatment

Three sheets, one accession. The three sheets share the slip and its wording, have consecutive herbarium numbers and carry no collector's number. The page treats them as one accession, as the catalogue does; the labels give a period, not a day, and do not show whether the sheets come from one gathering.

Collector. The typed label puts Yu, T. T. in the collector's field, and the slip says the specimens were presented by 俞德浚 (Yü Te-tsun). The collector field takes the typed label's T. T. Yu. He is Yü Te-tsun (俞德浚, 1908–1986): the Harvard botanist index gives the name and dates and notes that he collected extensively in Yunnan and Sichuan, and Chinese Wikipedia gives T.T.Yu as his standard form. The prose links Yü Te-tsun.

Date and title. The labels give the period 1926–28, which is stored in no date field. The title takes s.n., the present-day name of the place and the period.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue dates the gathering 1926; the labels give 1926–28.
