Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The tag gives the mountain, the year and the collectors. It names no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557907, 1,032 × 1,440 pixels).
- Tag (printed, upside down on the sheet): 察哈爾小五台山 / 民國廿四年 / 楊承元 李祖桂 採.
- Determination slip (by hand): No. 113 / Cannabis sativa L. (a round blue stamp, 卡) / Determinavit K.C.Kuan 1939.
- Fan Memorial Institute of Biology herbarium stamp; red 70875.
The readings agree on the tag, except that one marks the middle and last characters of the second name uncertain; one reading allows 118 for the slip's number.
Georeferencing
Xiaowutai Shan (小五台山, Wikidata Q953902) is a massif in Yu and Zhuolu counties, Zhangjiakou, Hebei. Chinese Wikipedia gives it about 40 km from east to west and 45 km from north to south, with its highest summit, Dongtai, at 2,882 m. OpenStreetMap maps its five summits (Dongtai, Beitai, Zhongtai, Nantai and Xitai, 2,671 to 2,882 m) but no outline of the massif or of its nature reserve. The point 39.90, 115.02 is Zhongtai (中台), the central of the five summits, OpenStreetMap node 940020558 (2,801 m), taken as the middle of the massif, which no source measures. It is an area point for the massif, not the place the plant was gathered. The tag gives no altitude. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 30 km.
Editorial treatment
Number and title. The only number on the sheet is the slip's 113; the title takes it, with the first collector's surname. The catalogue's 35993 appears nowhere on the sheet.
Collectors. The collector field takes both names as the tag gives them. No source on either was found, and neither is linked.
Province. Chahar, the tag's province, no longer exists; the massif lies in today's Hebei, and the province field takes Hebei.
Date. The tag gives the year 1935 only, which is stored.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives the number 35993, which appears nowhere on the sheet; the slip reads No. 113.
