Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label gives the place, the altitude, the month and the words under ground herb, whose sense is unclear; they say nothing about cultivation, and the label names no habitat that can be read as cultivated or wild, and no use. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (NAS00290132, 968 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Label (printed FLORA OF YUNNAN / Distributed From / HERBARIUM OF FAN MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY / Peiping, China. / 靜生生物調查所植物標本室贈, typed, faint): Collector C. W. Wang / Fd. No. 70262 / Locality A-tun-tze / Date Sept. 1935 / Cannabis sativa L. / Alt. 2700 m.; under ground herb; fr. green. / Determined by: K.C.Kuan; pencil Moraceae.
  • Tag (printed): YUNNAN C.W.WANG / 1935-36 / a stamped Chinese line, not read / red 70262.
  • YUNNAN province stamp; Nanjing Botanical Garden stamp; red 089233.

The two readings agree; neither reads the tag's Chinese line.

  • Yangling sheet (WUK0047765), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (WUK0047765, 990 × 1,440 pixels). Typed label: FLORA OF YUNNAN / Distributed From / HERBARIUM OF FAN MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY / Peiping, China / Collector C. W. Wang / Fd. No. 70262 / Locality A-tun-tze / Date Sept. 1935 / Cannabis sativa L. / Alt. 2700 m.; under ground herb; fr. green. / Determined by K.C.Kuan; 靜生生物調查所植物標本室贈. Tag (printed): 70262 (red) / a line in Chinese / 1935-36 / YUNNAN C.W.WANG. Determination slip: 中國科學院西北農業生物研究所植物標本室 / Cannabis sativa Linn. / 鑑定人, a stamped name ending 吉庆, 1960. 5. 17. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章). The readings agree on the label; one reads the tag's Chinese as 雲南王啓無, the other leaves most of it unread, and they differ on the first character of the determiner's name.

Georeferencing

A-tun-tze (阿墩子, Atuntze) is the old name of Shengping (升平镇), the seat of Deqin County: OpenStreetMap's node for the town (node 332545406) carries the alternative names 阿墩子 and Atunzu, and Chinese Wikipedia gives the name 阿墩子 from 1726. The point 28.48, 98.92 is that node. SRTM gives 3,198 m there against the label's 2,700 m. The point stands for the town and the township around it (Shengping, OpenStreetMap relation 10092300, about 766 km²), not the slope where the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 16 km.

Editorial treatment

Not a duplicate of Wang 69367. Wang 69367 (1935) shares the collector, the place and the month, but its number and altitude differ (69367, 3,000 m), so the two are separate gatherings and separate accessions.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's C. W. Wang. He is Wang Chi-wu (王启无, 1913–1987): the Harvard botanist index gives the name and dates and notes that he collected mostly in Yunnan, and Wikidata gives 王启无 as the Chinese form of the same entry. The prose links Wang Chi-wu.

Elevation. The elevation field stores the label's 2,700 m.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Two sheets, one accession. The Nanjing and Yangling sheets carry the same Fan Memorial Institute label. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.

Source discrepancies

  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists the Yangling sheet twice, under two record numbers with the same image (WUK0047765 also as record be20e035); the page cites the record that carries the sheet's barcode.

Source citations remain in the article. Éloise 01:50, 14 October 2026 (+07)
