Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The labels place the plant on a Mountain slope at A-tun-tze, at 3,000 m, in September 1935. They give no use. The plant grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (PE 00578074, 986 × 1,440 pixels; NAS00290129, 972 × 1,440 pixels).

  • PE 00578074, field form (printed FAN MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY / FLORA OF YUNNAN): Field No. 69367 (typed) / Date printed July Aug. 1935, July and Aug. struck through by hand, Sept. typed above / Locality printed 德欽設治局 (A-tun-tze) / Altitude 3000 m. / Habitat Mountain slope / Habit Herbs / Flower yellowish white. Two printed tags: YUNNAN C. W. WANG / 1935年 / 雲南王啟無採, red 69367. Determination slip: Cannabis sativa L. / Determinavit K.C.Kuan Nov. 1937. YUNNAN province stamp; red 53287.
  • NAS00290129, distribution label (printed FLORA OF YUNNAN / Distributed From / HERBARIUM OF FAN MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY / Peiping, China / 靜生生物調查所植物標本室, typed): Collector C.W.Wang / Fd. No. 69367 / Locality A-tun-tze / Date Sept. 1935 / Cannabis sativa L. / Alt. 3000 m.; in mountain slope; herb; fl. yellowish white. / Determined by K.C.Kuan; Moraceae in pencil. Two tags as on the Beijing sheet. Stamp of the Nanjing Botanical Garden, Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院植物研究所南京中山植物園); YUNNAN province stamp.

The readings agree on the forms. They differ on the tags' middle lines, read once as 1935年 and 雲南王啟無採 (Yunnan, collected by Wang Chi-wu) and once as 1935-36 and a line naming the Fan Memorial Institute, uncertain; one reading left the last digit of the Nanjing label's number under a smudge.

Georeferencing

A-tun-tze (阿墩子, Atuntze) is the old name of Shengping (升平镇), the seat of Deqin County: OpenStreetMap's node for the town (node 332545406) carries the alternative names 阿墩子 and Atunzu, and Chinese Wikipedia gives the name 阿墩子 from 1726. The form's 德欽設治局 is the Deqin administrative bureau, the unit that preceded the county. The point 28.48, 98.92 is that node. SRTM gives 3,198 m there against the label's 3,000 m. The point stands for the town and the township around it (Shengping, OpenStreetMap relation 10092300, about 766 km²), not the slope where the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 16 km.

Editorial treatment

Two sheets, one accession. The sheets share the collector, the number, the month, the place, the altitude and the habitat. The repository and catalogue number are Beijing's.

Date. The form's printed months are struck through and Sept. typed above them, and the Nanjing label gives Sept. 1935; September 1935 is stored.

Collector. The collector field keeps the labels' C. W. Wang. He is Wang Chi-wu (王启无, 1913–1987): the Harvard botanist index gives the name and dates and notes that he collected mostly in Yunnan, and Wikidata gives 王启无 as the Chinese form of the same entry. The prose links Wang Chi-wu.

Elevation. The elevation field stores the labels' 3,000 m.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
