Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The labels place the plant at a field side in the vicinity of Peking on 3 June 1929, and the New York catalogue gives the habitat Fieldside. They give no use. A field margin is outside the crop. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557923, 999 × 1,440 pixels).
- Fan Memorial Institute label (printed 靜生生物調查所植物標本室 / HERBARIUM OF FAN MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY): Ed. No. 20222 (pencil) / Herb. No. 70879 (red) / Cannabis sativa L. / Cannabiaceae / Collector F. T. Wang / Loc. Chihli / Determined by (blank) / Date 1929.
- Tag in pencil, partly hidden: 222….
The two readings agree. The New York sheet's image did not load on 8 October 2026 (the garden's server reset the connection); that sheet is cited from its catalogue.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The labels name the vicinity of Peking, an area with no fixed bounds around the city, larger than a district; the New York catalogue adds South of Peiping city, a direction with no distance. The city's point would not stand for the gathering. The province field takes Beijing.
Editorial treatment
Two sheets, one accession. The Beijing and New York sheets share the collector, number, date and place. The repository and catalogue number are Beijing's, the sheet that was read.
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's F. T. Wang. He is Wang Fa-tsuan (汪发缵, 1899–1985): the Harvard botanist index gives the name and dates and PE as his herbarium, and Wikidata gives F.T.Wang as the standard form of 汪发缵. The prose links Wang Fa-tsuan.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The New York catalogue gives the collector as T. Wang; both Beijing labels read F. T. Wang (汪發纘).
