Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label records a crop grown for the drug in a market garden in the dunes at Abéné, in 1993. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so the date of this sheet does not exclude introduced seed. The label names no growers and no local name; a market garden is a crop setting, but nothing on the label ties the plant to local seed. The accession is classified Other, and is listed as a borderline case. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from Meise's image (4775 × 7212 pixels); the page states only what the two readings agree.

  • Collector's label: printed COLL. : C. VANDEN BERGHEN / SENEGAL / N° handwritten 9803 / printed Loc. : Basse-Casamance handwritten Abéné / Dat. : 23 août 1993 / Alt. : 3 m / Hab. : Cultivé dans un "maraichage", dans une dépression dans les dunes littorales / Obs. : Cultivé pour la "drogue". / Fam. : Cannabinaceae / Nom. : Cannabis sativa L.
  • Holder's label: HERB. HORTI BOT. NAT. BELG.; Acc. 1993.

The collector's heading and number were read once (the second reading's image of the label began below them); the catalogue gives the same collector and number.

Georeferencing

The point 13.00, -16.72 is the village of Abéné, OpenStreetMap node 4671950017, in Bignona department, Ziguinchor Region. The label names Abéné and a hollow in the coastal dunes, and no spot within them. The label's altitude of 3 metres is 14 metres below the SRTM height at the node (17 metres), which agrees with a coastal place. It places the gathering at the village, not at the market garden. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The label gives C. Vanden Berghen; the collector field takes it, and the page does not identify him further.

Wording. The label's quotation marks around maraichage and drogue are the collector's; the page keeps them in its quotations.

Elevation. The field stores the label's 3 metres.
