Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The accession rests on three herbarium sheets of plants grown in Mississippi from seed whose labels give Thailand as its origin. They show that seed said to be Thai was grown there; they do not show where in Thailand the seed was gathered, who supplied it or how it reached the university. No surviving seed of the lot has been traced. The page therefore carries no locality, coordinates, classification or conservation priority.
Identifier
The identifier UMS-THA-UNK-0019720003 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence.
UMSstands for the University of Mississippi, which grew the lot.THAis the ISO code for Thailand, the recorded seed origin.UNK: no province is recorded.- Month
00: the date the seed was gathered is unknown. - Year 1972 is the year of the earliest dated sheet of the lot. The seed had reached the university by then; the year is not a collection date.
Lineage
The labels call Ti D1 the first generation of the fourth Thai seed lot. In the Turkish lots of the same garden the labels run T A - Turkish, original sample, T A 1 - Turkish - first generation of original sample and T A 2 - Turkish, second generation of original sample. Read that way, Ti D would be the seed as received, but the labels do not say whether the Ti D1 plants grew from that seed or from seed of an earlier planting. Among the 847 Cannabis sheets in Harvard's index (captured 8 October 2026), the only Thai codes of this form are Ti B1, Ti C1 and Ti D1; none is coded Ti A, and none is coded Ti D alone. Quimby's Thai lots of 1969 and 1970 (MS-SL, UMS-THA-UNK-0019690001; MS-SM and MS-SO, UMS-THA-UNK-0019700001) may be among the four Thai seed lots, but no label or source read so far says which, so no parent accession is set. Quimby's 1971 sheet carries the same code (UMS-THA-UNK-0019710001). It is kept as a separate accession because it comes from an earlier season, and no label says the two plantings used the same seed. The sourcing type follows the label's first generation.
Location and georeferencing
The country field gives the recorded seed origin, Thailand, not the place where the plants grew. The grow-out at University, Mississippi, is stated in the article. No coordinate is given and the map is off: a point in Mississippi would misplace Thai seed, and no place in Thailand is recorded.
Dates
The collection date is left empty because the date the seed was gathered is unknown. The sheets are dated 31 July to 1 August 1972, a range across two months, so the sample harvest date is stored as the year. The planting date, 21 March 1972, comes from the labels.
Plant numbers
Each 1972 sheet of the lot carries a number of the form 89 A: a figure shared by every sheet of the lot, then a letter for the plant. The figure may be a plot or row number, but no label says so, and the article does not call it one.
Label reading
The sheets have not been seen. The label text above is Harvard's transcription in its specimen index (read on 8 October 2026), where the lot code is in the remarks field. Harvard has published no image of any sheet of the lot.
- The collector field lists the three collectors as Harvard credits them. T. E. Lockwood is Tommie Earl Lockwood (1941–1975) in Harvard's botanist index.

M. W. Quimby, N. J. Doorenbos, C. E. Turner and A. Masoud described the cultivation and the morphological variation of Mississippi-grown cannabis in Economic Botany 27 (1973): 117–127 (doi:10.1007/BF02862224). The paper may identify the seed sources and explain the lot codes. It has not been read for this page, and nothing here depends on it.
