Evidentiary scope

The form and the tag give the place and the date. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (KUN 0169057, 959 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Form (printed INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING / FLORA OF CHINA, stamped): Field No. - 01089 / Date SEP. 19 1949 (blue) / Locality 綏遠 卓資山 梁山 / Collector 崔友文; the lines for altitude, habitat, habit, height, leaf, flower, fruit, notes, common name, family and name blank.
  • Tag tied to the stem (stamped): 崔友文 01089 / 綏遠 卓資山 梁山 / SEP 19 1949.
  • Determination slip (ink): Cannabis sativa L. / Determinavit K.S.Hao May 10. 1950.
  • Round red stamp with a star, 中國科學院昆明植物研究所 / 标本室, read in part; KUN No. 0525111; pencil 170.

The readings agree on the form and the tag. They differ on the determiner's initials, read as K.S. and as K. L., uncertain; a third look at the image reads K.S. Hao.

Georeferencing

卓資山 (Zhuozishan) is a hill and the town at it, the seat of Zhuozi County, Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia; Chinese Wikipedia gives the county's name as taken from the hill. 梁山 (Liangshan) was not found in Zhuozi County in OpenStreetMap. The point 40.88, 112.54 is the middle of Zhuozishan town's administrative area in OpenStreetMap (relation 10473967, about 378 km²), which falls inside the town's boundary; Wikidata's point for the town (Q10906109) lies about 3 km to the north-east. SRTM gives 1,466 m there, and the label gives no altitude. It is an area point for the town, not for Liangshan, which was not located, and not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 11 km.

Editorial treatment

Title and number. The title takes the collector's surname, Tsui (崔), and the number as stamped, 01089, as on Chang 0104 (1940); the catalogue gives 1089.

Collector. The collector field keeps the stamped 崔友文 (Ts'ui Yu-wen in the romanisation of the time; pinyin Cui Youwen). The Harvard botanist index lists a Y. W. Tsui who collected in Shensi in 1940–41, with sheets at Beijing, and a 崔友文 wrote a book on the economic plants of north China, 华北经济植物誌要, published in 1953. No source read ties the label's name to either, and the name is not linked.

Determination. The identified-by field takes the slip's K. S. Hao. He is Hao Kin-shen (郝景盛), born in 1903 or 1904: the Harvard botanist index gives 1904 and Chinese Wikipedia 1903, and they disagree on his death (1965 in the index, 1955 in Wikidata and Chinese Wikipedia). The index lists his collecting in Gansu, Hebei, Henan, Qinghai and Sichuan. The prose links Hao Kin-shen.

Date. The form is the National Academy of Peiping's, and its date, 19 September 1949, falls twelve days before the founding of the People's Republic; the slip is dated 10 May 1950.

Province. The form gives 綏遠 (Suiyuan), the province of the day. Zhuozishan now lies in Inner Mongolia, and the province field takes Inner Mongolia.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Source discrepancies

  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium gives the number as 1089; the form and the tag stamp 01089.
