Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label records the plant as Cultivé par les Pahouins à N'Djolé (cultivated by the Pahouins at N'Djolé): a crop grown by a named people at a named place, in 1887. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1887. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. It gives no use and no local name. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from GBIF's cached copy of the museum's image of P06829901 (1600 × 2458 pixels); the page states only what the two readings agree.
- Museum label: handwritten 717. / printed HERB. MUS. PARIS. / handwritten Cannabis sativa L. / printed GABON. and a blue stamp CONGO. / handwritten Cultivé par les Pahouins à N'Djolé. / printed M. Thollon. / handwritten Janvier 1887.
- On the mount beside the label, a handwritten 42 followed by a mark; it is not used.
The year's last digit is faint; one reading gives 7 with 2 as an alternative. The catalogue gives January 1887 for all three sheets, and the page follows it. The other two sheets, P06829898 and P06829900, have not been read: their images could not be retrieved.
Georeferencing
The point -0.18, 10.77 is the town of Ndjolé, OpenStreetMap node 925723766, in Abanga-Bigné department, Moyen-Ogooué. The label names N'Djolé and no place within it. Tropicos gives the point -0.188469, 10.76006 for Thollon 717, 0.82 km from the node, which agrees with the identification; the page uses the town's point, since Tropicos does not say how its point was taken. It places the gathering at the town, not at a spot within it. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.
Editorial treatment
Three sheets, one accession. The museum catalogues three Thollon sheets from N'Djolé, January 1887, each with the number 717 and the same note; Tropicos gives the same number for its Paris sheet from Ndjolé. They are treated as one gathering. Only P06829901 has been read.
The growers. Pahouins is a French name for the Fang, a people of northern Gabon, southern Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea (English Wikipedia, Fang people). The page quotes the label's word and names the people as the Fang.
Country. The catalogue files the sheets under Congo; the label prints GABON. and stamps CONGO., a name then used for French Congo, which included the Ogooué. Ndjolé is in Gabon, and the country is entered as Gabon.
Collector. The label prints M. Thollon.; the catalogue gives Thollon, F.R. and Tropicos F.-R. Thollon. The collector field takes Tropicos's initials.
Source discrepancies
- The museum's catalogue files the three sheets under the Republic of the Congo; the label and Tropicos place them at Ndjolé, in Gabon.
- The catalogue transcribes the label's people as Patouins; both readings of the label give Pahouins.
