Evidentiary scope
The five labels give the locality as โรงเรียนวนศาสตร์ แพร่ (Forestry School, Phrae), the date 1 August 1940 and the local name ป่านแม้ว (Meo hemp). Two of them, SN 232958 and SN 232960, add ปลูกขึ้นเอง to the note on the plant. The words combine the verb for planting with a phrase for coming up by itself, and they can be read as planted or as growing of its own accord. They fit both a crop and a plant that came up unaided, and nothing else on the labels says which this was. The accession is classified Unknown. The gathering shows no continuing population and no living germplasm holding, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Georeferencing
The labels name the Forestry School at Phrae (โรงเรียนวนศาสตร์ แพร่). OpenStreetMap maps the Old Forestry School in Mueang Phrae District (way/766133178). The infobox georeferences it at 18.14, 100.14, which stands at 158 m on SRTM. The labels give no altitude to check the point against. It is a locality point, not a reconstructed collection point. It places the gathering to within about 1 km.
Editorial treatment
The five sheets are one gathering. They share the collector's number, the date, the collector and the locality. The catalogue gives them one accession number.
The collector field uses the catalogue's name, Suvannasuddhi, S., in the house order S. Suvannasuddhi. The labels are signed with a given name, สมคิด, which begins with the same initial; the full name is not asserted.
The labels give two heights, 6 to 8 feet and 7 to 8 feet. The article reports both.
ปลูกขึ้นเอง is quoted in the article without a translation. Read here as "planted by [us] ourselves", it would record the plants as grown at the school. That reading wants a check by a Thai reader before it is used in the article.
ป่านแม้ว is given as written, with a reading added on 22 September 2026. The article glosses the two elements separately, from the SEAlang Library Thai Dictionary, whose entries rest on the Mary Haas Thai Dictionary Project: ป่าน "ramie; hemp; flax" and แม้ว "Meo (or Miao), a tribe of hill people in Northern Thailand". The compound ป่านแม้ว itself is not in that dictionary, and is not among the vernacular names the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden's ethnobotanical database lists for the species (กัญชา, กัญชาจีน, คุนเช้า, ปาง Shan, ยานอ Karen). It is read here as a label name, not as a listed vernacular.
The Forest Herbarium's Garrett sheets of 1933 support the reading: they give ป่าน as the local name and say in English that the plant was cultivated by Mêo people for weaving.
Open question: whether the article should say that the people the label calls แม้ว / Meo are the people now generally called Hmong. The equivalence is not in the dictionary entry cited, and no source read for this page states it. It is left out of the article until a source is agreed.
The infobox image is the Forest Herbarium's own scan of SN 009252, one of the five sheets of the gathering, which the herbarium publishes with all rights reserved. It is used under fair use, with the rationale on its file page.
On 22 September 2026 the herbarium's scans of the other four sheets were added in a Sheets section. The one-scan-per-accession limit of 18 September 2026 was withdrawn the same day: where a herbarium holds a gathering on several sheets, every sheet the article cites is shown. The five labels differ, and the article cites each of them separately: the 97906 stamp, the two heights, ปลูกขึ้นเอง, the staminate-flower packet and the 1958 determination. Each file page carries its own rationale naming what that sheet is cited for.
Source discrepancies
- The Forest Herbarium catalogue files all five sheets under accession 97905. The stamp on SN 009251 reads 97906.
