Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant on open slopes by the Mewa Khola, at 3,500 feet, in August 1956, with pale green flowers. It names no use, variety or local name, and does not say whether the plant was wild, escaped or cultivated. The accession is classified Other. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from the Edinburgh image (E00248602, 2784 × 4096 pixels).
- Typed label Ex Herbario Musei Britannici / FLORA OF NEPAL / [LONG. 87°–88°E.] / 1956 / Cannabis sativa L. / Tamur Valley. Mewa Khola / 3,500ft. / 7.8.1956 / On open slopes. Flowers pale green. / Coll. JOHN D. A. STAINTON No. 1286.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted. GeoNames lists several streams named Mewa Khola in Koshi Province (for example 12420740 and 11606506), and the label's Tamur Valley does not say which, or where along it the slope was. The province field takes Koshi Province, in which the Tamur valley lies; no district is given, because the stream cannot be placed in one.
Editorial treatment
The collector field takes J.D.A. Stainton, the form used on his other accessions. The heading Ex Herbario Musei Britannici is the same as on Stainton 586 (1954).
