Page scope
Southern hemp covers southern hemp (южная конопля) as Soviet agronomy used the term: one of the geographic types of cultivated hemp, its zoning, its use for fibre in the central hemp belt, the varieties named after it, the fall of its narcotic content after 1973 and the Soviet laws that named its varieties. South Manchurian hemp is a section of this page. South Krasnodar, South Chuy and South Arkhon hemp have their own pages. The Soviet law on Indian hemp is on Indian hemp.

Sources

  • Сельскохозяйственная энциклопедия, third edition, entry «Конопля», signed B. Dmitriev. It is cited from the transcription on agrolib.ru, which gives neither the volume nor the page. The entry's literature list includes M. Avrov's Южная конопля (Moscow, 1937).
  • Лубяные культуры (Moscow: Selkhozgiz, 1950), a collection of the All-Union Research Institute of Bast Crops edited by Ya. M. Tollochko. A. I. Arinshtein's two chapters are cited, on seed oil (pp. 108–114) and on seed shattering (pp. 115–121).
  • The two collections of 1957 and 1958 in the series Передовой опыт в сельском хозяйстве (Selkhozgiz) are collections of chapters by different authors. Each chapter is cited under its own authors, from the contents pages.
  • Биология, возделывание и первичная обработка конопли и кенафа, volumes 34 (Glukhov, 1971) and 35 (Glukhov, 1974), the institute's collected papers.
  • The breeding laboratory page of the Krasnodar agricultural research institute (now the Lukyanenko National Grain Centre) is cited from the Internet Archive copy of 15 November 2019; the original address now opens the centre's home page.
  • de Meijer (1995) bases the ancestries of former Soviet cultivars partly on unpublished notes by K. Hillig and on personal communications.
  • Sukhorada (2005) is cited from the text of the dissertation's summary on dissercat.com, which has no page numbers. Romanenko, Skripnikov and Sukhorada (2016), Grigorets (2009) and Maksimov and others (2020) are cited from CyberLeninka, also without page numbers.

Where the sources differ

  • THC before 1970. Romanenko, Skripnikov and Sukhorada (2016) give 4.5 to 1.5 per cent for southern varieties before 1970; the Krasnodar laboratory page gives 1.5 to 2.0 per cent for 1970. The article gives both, attributed.
  • Fibre yield in the central belt. The laboratory page gives one and a half to two times the yield of the best local varieties; the encyclopedia gives two to two and a half times that of local hemp. Both are given.
  • South Chuy hemp and the zoning scheme. The encyclopedia's zoning gives East Asian hemp, not southern hemp, to the Kirghiz SSR. Arinshtein (1950) counts South Chuy among the southern varieties, and the variety's name carries the word "southern". The article states both.
  • The date of the RSFSR decree of 1987. The decree that brought art. 225 to five names is dated 29 June 1987, No. 6462-XI (Ведомости Верховного Совета РСФСР 1987, No. 27, art. 961) in Sumachev's reference list and in the edition note of the consolidated code on base.garant.ru. Sumachev's text names a decree of 15 July 1987 once; his reference list cites a decree of 15 July 1974 and none of 15 July 1987. The USSR decree with the same list, No. 7226-XI, is dated 22 June 1987 by Babayan. The article gives 22 June for the USSR decree and 29 June for the RSFSR decree.
  • The Kirghiz SSR code. The edition of art. 236 of 1 October 1997 on cbd.minjust.gov.kg prints «индийской, южной, маньчжурской, южной чуйской, южной архонской и южной краснодарской конопли», with a comma between «южной» and «маньчжурской». The RSFSR and Kazakh SSR texts have «южной маньчжурской». The article says only that the Kirghiz code listed the varieties by name.

South Manchurian hemp

  • The sources use the name in two senses. In the agronomic literature of the 1950s it is a cultivated hemp: South Manchurian hemp sown in Chernihiv Oblast in 1954 (Krasheninnikov and Ryumina 1958, p. 40), hemp called Manchurian in the zelenets trials of 1954–1955 (Ryumina 1958, p. 70), and seed of Manchurian hemp brought from China in 1959–1961 (Tkalich 1974, p. 102). In the press and police reports of Primorsky Krai it is the wild hemp of the krai (Grigorets 2009; EastRussia 2017).
  • No source cited here joins the two senses. Ryumina (1958, p. 67) lists the domestic southern varieties separately from varieties from the People's Republic of China, but does not say which group her Manchurian hemp belongs to; whether the hemp sown in 1954 came from Chinese seed is not stated.
  • None of the sources gives a breeder, a zoning record or a description of the plant under the name, and Genesys lists no seed lot under it. The section is kept to what the sources state.

Not used

  • A web page on selekcija.ru of no stated authorship divides the southern group into subgroups and places South Krasnodar and South Arkhon hemp in an "Italian" subgroup and South Chuy hemp in an "East Asian" one. It names no source and is not used.
  • Secondary works that place the "South" names in the decree of 1934 or in the criminal code of 1960 conflict with the texts of the 1960 code, which names Indian hemp alone, and of the decree of 3 July 1965, which adds South Manchurian and South Chuy hemp. The article follows the texts.
  • Senchenko, Demkin, Zhatov and others, Сорта конопли, их районирование и способы использования (Moscow, 1978), the likeliest printed source for the zoning of the varieties, is not available online.
