Evidentiary scope

The label records cannabis in cultis, in cultivated ground, at Bender Ges in November 1900. That is evidence of cannabis in cultivated land at the town at that date; it does not say whether the plant was the crop or a weed of the fields, and it names no use, variety or local name. The accession is classified Other, as other sheets that document cultivation are. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00405507, 2497 × 4096 pixels).

  • Printed label P. SINTENIS: / Iter transcaspico - persicum 1900 - 1901. / № 1331. / Cannabis sativa L. / Persia borealis; prov. Asterabad; Bender Ges : / in cultis. / 25. XI. 1900. / determ. J. Freyn.
  • Vienna revision slip HERB. MUSEI HIST. NATUR. VINDOB. / Rev. pro „Flora Iranica" / Est! / 197 with 7 added by hand / K. H. Rechinger, with no name written in.
  • Edinburgh receipt stamp ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN EDINBURGH with 135/76 and a sheet count written in: not a field datum.

Georeferencing

The coordinate is Bandar-e Gaz as Wikidata places the town (Q2161178, 36.7742, 53.9481), stored as 36.77, 53.95: the label names the town and gives no finer place. Its SRTM 30-metre elevation is −19 metres, the Caspian shore lying below sea level; the label gives no altitude to test it against.

Editorial treatment

The locality field takes the town's present name, Bandar-e Gaz; the article quotes the label's Bender Ges and Asterabad. The province field takes Golestan Province and the district field Bandar-e Gaz County, labelled County, the form used for Iranian accessions. The identified-by field takes J. Freyn, the label's determiner; Rechinger's 1977 slip confirms the name without changing it. The Lund duplicate (LD 2056056) is named in the article and is not a separate accession.
