Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The catalogue places a cannabis fruit lot in Japan, with no date and no place within the country. The lot itself has not been seen. The catalogue gives no habitat and no note on cultivation, so the accession is classified Other; no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Not read: the holder publishes no image of the sheet. The page reports the catalogue's fields as the Naturalis Biodiversity Center gives them (read 12 October 2026): unit L 0421683; collector Siebold, PF von; number s.n.; country Japan; no locality; basis Carpologica; determination Cannabis sativa L.; no date, province or coordinates; earlier number 5208.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The catalogue names only Japan, and gives no place within it.
Editorial treatment
Catalogue only. The accession is made from the holder's catalogue alone, with no image; every fact on the page is the catalogue's, and the label may hold more than the catalogue transcribes.
Title. The catalogue gives no number and no date. Philipp Franz von Siebold lived from 1796 to 1866 and was in Japan from 1823 to 1829 and from 1859 to 1862 (English Wikipedia), so a gathering of his is no later than 1866, the limit the title gives. The title Siebold s.n. (by 1866) is already held by the lectotype sheet L 0420303, and three more units share its collector and limit, so each of them adds the holder's catalogue number.
Collector. The collector field takes P. F. von Siebold, the catalogue's Siebold, PF von in initials form; the prose links his biography.
Collection method. The unit is filed in Naturalis's carpological collection (basis Carpologica), which keeps fruits and seeds, not pressed sheets. The collection method field gives Seeds, the value the infobox has for seed material. The lot belongs to a herbarium's fruit collection, not to a seed bank, and the page does not claim that it holds viable seed.
Numbers. The catalogue's earlier number 5208 is a number of the holder's, not a collector's, and is given here only.
Source discrepancies
- None. GBIF gives the collector, country and determination that the Naturalis catalogue gives, and its basis of record is preserved specimen where Naturalis says Carpologica.
