Discussion

Sources

  • The Ministry of Education's notes to the Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan 2010 (chapter 3, part 5, entry 05003 あさ): the seed of アサ, sold treated against germination because of the Cannabis Control Law, and blended into shichimi tōgarashi.
  • nippon.com, 17 July 2024: the 1625 founding as tradition, the ingredients of the three best-known makers' blends, the hemp seed's place in the blend.
  • The Yagenbori firm's own pages: the founding, the name, the sales patter, the mixing to order.

Origin story

  • The founding in 1625, the presentation to Tokugawa Iemitsu and the grant of the character 徳 are the firm's own account, repeated by nippon.com as what "is said". No independent source for them is cited, so the article gives them as the firm's.
  • The firm states that its blend has not changed since then and that each ingredient is a medicine. Those claims are not on the article.

Is it cannabis?

  • The food tables identify あさ as the seed of アサ and tie its sale to the Cannabis Control Law. They class アサ in the Moraceae, an older family placement; it is now placed in the Cannabaceae.

Title

  • Shichimi togarashi without the macron, the form of the Yagenbori English page (shichimi-togarashi). Redirects: Shichimi, Shichimi-togarashi, Nanairo togarashi (the firm's 七色唐辛子) and the Japanese 七味唐辛子 and 七色唐辛子.

Kind and plant part

  • Condiment. Seed.
  • First recorded: no year given; the only year in the sources is the firm's founding date.
  • Still made: yes.
