Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The plant was an escape growing spontaneously in a formerly irrigated field near Kandahar (supplementary file 1, p. 31), which supports the Feral classification. The sheet does not show whether cannabis was being grown nearby, and no local name or use appears in any of the sources. Its importance is nomenclatural, as the epitype of var. afghanica. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
The sheet's label has not been read. The paper's Figure 5b shows the mounted specimen with only a fragment of a printed number (32) at the upper left edge, and no label in view. Harvard's specimen index (kiki.huh.harvard.edu) returns no Cannabis sheet of any kind, so the sheet has no Harvard catalogue page that could be read. The Tropicos specimen page (101275986) returns no data without a browser session.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted, because near Kandahar names a city, not a collection point. The province field takes Kandahar Province.
Editorial treatment
The title takes the number 26505. In the paper the sheet is ECON 26505. The 1974 plate caption gives R.E. Schultes 26505, read from the page image of the Internet Archive copy (biostor-160872, p. 359), where the OCR garbles it. Harvard's index holds Schultes's Afghan Datura gatherings of the same week under his numbers 26501 (Nangarhar) and 26502 (Kandahar), dated 1971-12-13 – 1971-12-20. The supplementary file's list of specimens also cites ECON 26504 and ECON 26508, both near Kandahar on XII.13–20.1971. So 26505 is read as Schultes's collector number and ECON as the herbarium. The catalogue number field keeps the paper's form, ECON 26505.
The collection date is stored to the month, December 1971, because the paper gives a range, 13–20 December, and Harvard dates the sibling gatherings the same way. Tropicos's 13 December is the first day of the range.
The scientific name field takes the name of which the specimen is a type, with McPartland and Small as determiners. The Harvard Oakes Ames economic botany herbarium is entered under the Harvard University Herbaria, as the wiki's other Harvard sheets are.
