Why Samarkand is a growing area

  • The Brockhaus and Efron entry on Samarkand oblast (1900) lists hemp among the crops of its irrigated land, without a district and without saying what it was grown for.
  • The Vavilov Institute held seed from Samarkand (accession 455) and from Kattakurgan district (457) when it sowed them in 1997 (Kutuzova and others, 1998). The source does not say whether either was a local landrace, a weed or a cultivar.
  • The police reported a sown field in Jambay district in 2021 (Kun.uz) and a backyard planting in Samarkand district in 2026 (Zamon.uz).
  • The area is drawn on the whole province because the dictionary reports hemp for the oblast as a whole, and the places named since lie in three districts of it.

The name

The bare name goes to the growing area. The city would be Samarkand (city); the province is Samarkand Region. Samarqand is the Uzbek form.

Growing status

The status is Active: the press reports cultivation in 2021 and 2026. No source says that growing has ended.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is a proxy: Samarkand Region as mapped in OpenStreetMap (relation 196249), about 16,500 km², the figure in the infobox.
  • The Samarkand oblast of the 1900 dictionary was larger: it also took in Jizzakh and Khujand districts and the upper Zarafshan valley, which lie outside today's Samarkand Region. Those parts are not in this area.
  • The infobox point (39.83, 66.41) is the centre of the province. The border is not drawn from accession or news points.

Accessions and news

  • The two Vavilov Institute accessions are not on the wiki. No accession on the wiki comes from the province.
  • The interior ministry's report of 16 September 2026 (Qoradori-2026) is attached here and to Bukhara. The Kun.uz report of 9 August 2021 is not yet a news item.

Sources

  • Kutuzova and others (1998): read in the web edition, where the tables are split into columns. The catalogue numbers, names and seed yields were paired by their order in each table (Table 5, Glukhov; Table 6, Penza). The journal's own citation line names four authors; the byline also names Janos Berenji.
  • Schuyler (1876): p. 257 describes smoking at Samarkand; it says nothing of where the hemp was grown. His remark that hemp was grown "exclusively for the oil" (p. 294) concerns Turkistan in general and is not used here.
  • Kun.uz (9 August 2021): the English headline speaks of a farmer "growing hemp in his house"; the text describes a field. The page follows the text.
