Discussion

Inclusion

Kew's catalogue names the object Rope as used in Kashmir and files it under the plant name 153.04 CANNABACEAE Cannabis sativa and the use MATERIALS - Fibres. The word hemp does not appear in the entry. Kew's help page says the collection classifies its specimens by plant family and genus; this one is classified under Cannabis. The rope is an object made from cannabis, and the plant name carries no hedge, so the attribution is Stated. The infobox quotes the plant name, the only wording in the entry that names the plant. The object's name says what it is and where rope of this kind was used.

Evidentiary scope

The entry gives Kashmir as the place, a donor and a date in the label notes, and no maker, no date of making, no collector and no date of acquisition. It documents a rope of cannabis fibre that Kew's catalogue describes as used in Kashmir; it does not say where the rope was made or where its fibre was grown. It documents no plant, population or living holding, and landrace, feral and conservation fields do not apply to an artefact.

Kew publishes no image of this object, and GBIF carries none.

Editorial treatment

As used in Kashmir. Kew's name for the object says where rope of this kind was used. It is quoted as it stands, and the page does not turn it into a statement that the rope was made in Kashmir.

Country. Kew's ISO country and TDWG region fields give India, and its geography line reads Kashmir. The catalogue names no finer place. The country field gives India, as Kew codes it, and Kashmir is the place as recorded.

Dates. The catalogue gives no entry book number, no donor date and no collection date, so the date made and the date acquired are both empty. The notes transcribe Label source: 2.10.1875. They do not say what the date records, and the page uses it as neither a date of making nor a date of acquisition.

Acquired from. The field gives Dr Aitchison, Kew's Aitchison Dr, with no initials. The donor is not further identified. The field collector is empty, because Kew's collector fields are blank.

Same donor, same place. Kew records the donor Aitchison Dr and the place Kashmir for broken leaves of hemp, EBC 43407, with the donor date 1876. The catalogue does not say whether the two objects came to Kew together.

No culture is entered. Kew's catalogue has no culture field and names no people as makers or users.

These notes were recorded during artefact preparation. Source citations remain in the article. Éloise 18:40, 14 October 2026 (+07)
