Discussion
Identifier
The accession identifier is RSC-AFG-NAN-0120220001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.
- Province segment
NANis for Nangarhar Province, which the sourcing line names. - Year 2022 is the harvest the listing gives, "winter 2022". The month digits are
01because no month is given. - Sequence 0001. It is the only RSC accession for this province segment.
Sourcing
The RSC listing for Nangarhar as it stood on 27 October 2026 and its ten versions in the Wayback Machine from March 2023 to June 2026; the Kwik Seeds listing as it stood on 26 October 2026; RSC's posts of 13 February 2023, 29 August 2024 and 5 February 2025; and the GRIN-Global entries for G 33746 and G 33883. Kwik Seeds is the shop RSC calls its other site (RSC, Hemp & Multipurpose).
Lots at this listing
All ten archived versions are titled Nangarhar and give the 2022 sourcing, so one lot has been on sale and the page is not split. The listing's address, afghan-hindu-kush-cannabis-strain-landrace-seeds, does not carry the line's name. RSC's post of 13 August 2019 announced landraces collected that year in Nangarhar Province. No RSC listing gives a 2019 Nangarhar sourcing, and they are not documented here.
Typing
- Classification: Landrace, sourcing type
Point of Origin, autochtonousYes: the listing describes seed collected from the harvest in Nangarhar. - Collector.
Angus, as on the other accessions whose sourcing line reads "Landrace Genetics". - Leaf shape. "Classic Indica morphology" is entered as
Broad, after RSC's Indicas category, which describes Indicas as broad-leafleted, as on RSC-AFG-HEL-0120220001. - Purpose. Charas is entered as purpose
Recreationand processingDry-sift; the culinary seed is kept in the processing notes. - Growth pattern is left empty: "short, compact" has no equivalent in the vocabulary.
- Viability.
Viable, from the retest of summer 2025. - Conventions. Photoperiod
Short-dayand introgressionMinimalfollow the other RSC accessions; the listing states neither.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The listing and the donor's note on the USDA entry G 33746 name only Nangarhar Province. The donor's coordinate on that entry and on G 33883, 34.2204, 70.3800, lies 3 m from OpenStreetMap's label point for Nangarhar Province (node 312470039), so it marks the province, not a place within it. The finest place named is the province, which gives no point. The growing area entered, Nangarhar, is drawn on the whole of Nangarhar Province, so it names no smaller place.
Source discrepancies
- Latitude of the photographs. RSC now: "Photos are plants from this accession at 43° N in mid-July". RSC in October 2024: "at 40° N in mid-July". The captions follow the current listing.
- Viability. RSC: retested in summer 2025, "close to 100% germination". RSC in May 2025: on discount because the seed's "viability may have dropped below 80%". Kwik Seeds: "close to 100% viability".
- Purpose. RSC: "Charas (sieved); seed (culinary)"; Kwik Seeds and RSC until October 2024: "Charas (sieved)".
- Genetics line. RSC: "Afghan Cannabis Landrace"; Kwik Seeds and RSC in March 2023: "Afghan Traditional Domesticate (Landrace)".
Photographs
The infobox image and the gallery are from the RSC listing, uploaded under fair use at reduced resolution. The listing says the photographs are plants from this accession at 43° N in mid-July, and the captions follow it. Of the listing's five images, two are near-identical crops of one picture, and one of them is used. The people at the edges of the pictures are not identified and their faces are out of frame.
USDA genebank accession
The U.S. National Plant Germplasm System holds Nangarhar seed as G 33746 (GRIN-Global entry), received on 22 August 2023 in a donation from Angus. The infobox lists it as the same lot as this accession:
- the donor's note, "Collected in Nangarhar, Afghanistan – from harvest of winter 2022", gives the province and the harvest the listing gives;
- every archived version of the listing, before and after the donation, sells the same lot.
A second entry, G 33883 Nangarhar (GRIN-Global entry), received on 25 July 2024 from the same donor, carries the same point but no narrative or year. Nothing in it says which harvest it is, so it is not listed in the infobox; it is its own accession, NPG-AFG-NAN-0020240002. Both entries carry notes from the unit's 2024 field trial in New York; the article does not report them.
