Discussion

Identifier

The accession identifier is RSC-AFG-JOW-0120180001-R1: the identifier of the 2018 collection, RSC-AFG-JOW-0120180001, with the reproduction suffix -R1.

Sourcing

The RSC listing for Sheberghan as it stood on 27 October 2026 and its nine versions in the Wayback Machine from October 2023 to April 2026 that sell the maintenance-grow stock; the Kwik Seeds listing as it stood on 26 October 2026; and the GRIN-Global entry for G 33757.

Evidentiary scope

The sources establish that the seed on sale comes from a maintenance grow of the 2018 collection made outside Afghanistan in 2023, by open pollination, with no more than a double-digit number of parent plants. They do not say where it was grown, by whom, or how many generations separate it from the collected seed.

Typing

  • Accession type: Reproduction, autochtonous No: the listing calls the seed stock from an ex situ maintenance grow.
  • Classification: Landrace, the class of the collection it was grown from.
  • Sourcing type is left empty: the sources do not say how many generations have been grown.
  • No coordinates. The sources do not say where the reproduction was grown. The collection's place is on RSC-AFG-JOW-0120180001, so the line appears on the map once.
  • Traits are on the collection's page, after the model of the other RSC reproductions.
  • Seed viability is left empty: neither listing reports a test.

Photographs

The infobox image and the gallery are from the RSC listing, uploaded under fair use at reduced resolution; the listing captions none of them. Its five PNG images first appear in the version of 1 October 2023, the first to sell the maintenance-grow stock, and four photographs of plants beside a measuring pole in the version of September 2024. They show plants grown outside Afghanistan, so they are on this page and not on the collection's; the captions describe what the pictures show. Of the PNG images, two are used; of the photographs, one, which shows no person. People at the edges of the others are not identified.

USDA genebank accession

The U.S. National Plant Germplasm System holds this seed as G 33757 (GRIN-Global entry), received on 22 August 2023 in a donation from Angus. The infobox lists it as the same lot as this accession:

  • the donor's note describes "Seeds from an ex-situ maintenance grow of a charas landrace originally collected near Sheberghan, northern Afghanistan, 2018 harvest";
  • the listing dates its own maintenance-grow stock to August 2023, the month of the donation, and has sold it since.

The entry's point, 36.6650, 65.7520, describes the collection and is discussed on Talk:RSC-AFG-JOW-0120180001. A curator's note from the unit's 2024 field trial in New York says that plants seemed likely to be susceptible to Septoria; the article does not report it.
