Identifier

The accession identifier is RSC-AFG-BAL-0520070001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.

  • Holder segment RSC stands for The Real Seed Company.
  • Province segment BAL is for Balkh Province, where the merchant said the seed came from, as on RSC-AFG-BAL-0120060001.
  • Month 05 and year 2007 are the date of purchase that the donor's note on the USDA genebank entry G 33740 gives, "Collected May 2007". The listing gives the year only.
  • Sequence 0001. It is the only RSC accession for this province segment, month and year.

Sourcing

The RSC listing for Mazar-i-Sharif as it stood on 27 October 2026, its 26 versions in the Wayback Machine from August 2019 to July 2026, the Kwik Seeds listing of the same line as it stood on 26 October 2026, the GRIN-Global entry for G 33740, and RSC's post of 22 July 2023 on Balkhi charas of 2007. Kwik Seeds is the shop RSC calls its other site (RSC, Hemp & Multipurpose).

Evidentiary scope

This page is the seed RSC bought in Peshawar in 2007. Every archived version of the listing, from August 2019 on, gives the same sourcing line and sells a reproduction of that seed, so RSC has never listed the 2007 seed itself; the reproduction is RSC-AFG-BAL-0520070001-R1. The merchant's statements about the strain, the harvest and his family reach the wiki only through the donor's note on G 33740, which RSC's collector wrote in 2023; no other witness to the purchase is known, and the article attributes them. The account of the 2006 and 2007 harvests and of the crackdown in Balkh is RSC's own and is attributed.

Relation to the 2006 seed

RSC's first website sold Mazar-i-Sharif seed that it said in May 2009 was "all from Winter 2006" (RSC-AFG-BAL-0120060001). A harvest of winter 2006 bought in May 2007 would fit both statements, and no source says whether the seed bought in Peshawar is that seed or another. The two are kept as separate accessions, and each names the other as related. The product page of May 2010 on the old site announced "Fresh stock now available"; nothing ties that stock to either accession.

Typing

  • Classification: Landrace. The merchant named Balkh as the place the seed and his charas came from and the strain as the one grown there for charas. The class rests on that statement, reported through the donor's note.
  • Sourcing type: Commercial, because the seed was bought from a merchant in Peshawar, not gathered from growers at the source. Autochtonous is left empty for the same reason.
  • Collector. Angus, the collector the GRIN entry names for the 2007 purchase.
  • Traits. The heights, leaf shape and stigma colours in the infobox are the listing's description of the reproduction on sale, the only description of the line RSC publishes. "Charas (sieved resin)" is entered as processing method Dry-sift. The harvest runs from October to December after the listing's "October to early December".
  • Conventions. Photoperiod Short-day and introgression Minimal follow the other RSC accessions; the listing states neither.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The seed was bought in Peshawar from a merchant who said it came from "Balkh", and neither the listing nor the donor's note on the USDA entry G 33740 names a place within Balkh. The entry's own point, 34.01, 71.52, is Peshawar, the place of purchase (OpenStreetMap places it in Peshawar City Tehsil), not where the plants grew. Its comment adds a second pair, 36.75° N and 66.89° E, each with a query mark; that pair lies 1.1 km from the town of Balkh (OpenStreetMap node 312726837). "Balkh" names both that town and the province around it, and nothing in the sources says which the merchant meant, so the finest place named is Balkh Province, and no point is given for a province. The growing area entered, Balkh, is drawn on the whole of Balkh Province, so it names no smaller place.

Photographs

None. The listing's photographs show plants of the reproduction grown in Spain and in Oregon and are on RSC-AFG-BAL-0520070001-R1. Two photographs captioned in 2019 as a northern Afghan landrace grown in Humboldt in the 1970s, "presumed to be the Mazari landrace", show plants that are not from this seed, and a photograph captioned "Mazari first garda, 2007, photo by Mriko" shows charas, not plants; none is used.
