Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The slips place the plants in hollows between the hills around Hailar in July 1918. They give no use and no word of cultivation. The plants grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (TIE 00004153, 1,000 × 1,659 pixels; TIE 00004148, 1,000 × 1,659 pixels).
- TIE 00004153, slip (Russian, ink): № 56 (small, in the corner) / Cannabis L. / C. sativa L. / Окрестности Хайлара / по ложбинам между / сопками 9/VII 1918 г. Printed HERBIER form: V. Pokrovsky (typed on the Herbier line) / Famille Moraceae, 大麻科 faint in pencil / Nom scientifique Cannabis / Station Barga-Harbin (typed). A second number, 1441, above the form. Barcode TJNHM HERBARIUM (TIE).
- TIE 00004148, slip (Russian, ink, on salmon paper): Cannabis sativa L. / окр. Хайлара по лож- / бинам (падям) / между сопками / 9/VII 1918 г. Покровский. Printed HERBIER form, the Herbier line blank: Famille Moraceae, 大麻科 faint / Nom scientifique Cannabis sativa L. / Date 9.VII.1918. A second number, 1446, above the form. Barcode TJNHM HERBARIUM (TIE).
The two readings agree on the slips' place and date. One marks the 6 of № 56 uncertain; a third look at the image reads 56. One reads the signature on TIE 00004148 as Покровский with an uncertain initial before it, the other as Покровский alone.
- Harbin sheet (HLNM01126), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (HLNM01126, 2,000 × 1,333 pixels). A two-page spread: a folder with the museum's label on the left, the sheet on the right. Printed form (pre-reform Russian, with a Chinese line), filled in ink: Музей Общества Изученія Маньчжурскаго края. (Museum of the Society for the Study of the Manchurian Region) / 駐哈爾濱東省文物研究會陳列所 / Отдѣлъ естествознанія – ботаника. / Гербарій флоры Маньчжуріи. / Сем. Moraceae Lindl. / Родъ и видъ Cannabis sativa L. Конопля. / Гдѣ собрано Окр. Хайлара по ложбинам (падям) между сопками / Собралъ and Опредѣлилъ, bracketed: В. Покровский / № 56. / 9 and a month numeral, overwritten, read as VII / 19[1]8 г., the last figures overwritten. In red on the form: +1, 1372 and a struck-through № 9[·][·]. Slip (ink): №56 / C. sativa L. / a red number, struck through / Окрестности Хайлара по ложбинам (падям) между сопками 9-VII 1918 г. Folder label (printed, bilingual, mixed simplified and traditional characters, so post-1949): 黑龍江省博物館 / Museum of Heilungchiang Province / 号数 № 1372 / 科名 桑科 / 标本名 大麻 / 采集期 1918. 7. 9. / 地点 海拉尔附近 and a phrase read as 丘陵间之洼地上 (low ground between hills) / 采集者 a transcription of the name, read as 包阔洛夫斯基 and as 包頓洛夫斯基, after a mark read as B. or 73 / 審定者 仝上 (the same). Barcode 黑龙江省博物馆植物标本室 (HLNM). The readings agree on the number, the date, the collector and the place, except that one takes the form's cursive ложбинам as лощинам (both: hollows, gullies); the slip and the Tianjin slips read ложбинам. Neither reads the struck red numbers with confidence.
Georeferencing
No point is given. Hailar is today's Hailar District of Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia (Wikidata), but the slips name the environs of Hailar, hollows between the hills around the town: an area with no fixed bounds, and the sheets name no place within it. The town's point would stand for none of the hollows. The province field takes Inner Mongolia.
Editorial treatment
Three sheets, one accession. The slips give the same place, in the same words, and the same date. On the Tianjin sheets the number 56 and the word (падям) appear one on each, the number on TIE 00004153 and the word on TIE 00004148; the Harbin sheet carries both, on its form and on its slip, with the same place and date. The page takes the three sheets as gathering no. 56. No sheet says that the plants on the unnumbered TIE 00004148 were taken with it, and the Harbin sheet shows only that the wording with (падям) belongs to no. 56. The repository and catalogue number are TIE 00004153's, the sheet with the number.
Title and number. The title takes the collector's surname and the slip's number, 56.
Collector. The collector field takes V. Pokrovsky, typed on the form of TIE 00004153; the slip of TIE 00004148 is signed Покровский. The Harvard botanist index lists a V. Pokrovski who collected in Manchuria from 1918 to 1927, with material at Tianjin, and a study of the herbarium of the Heilongjiang Provincial Museum (Bulletin of Botanical Research, 2024) lists a V. S. Pokrovsky (spelt Pokrvsky) collecting from 1918 to 1926, with Hailar station among his places. Neither gives his full name or dates, and the name is not linked. The form on the Harbin sheet enters В. Покровский against both Собралъ (collected) and Опредѣлилъ (determined), and the identified-by field takes V. Pokrovsky.
Province. The station typed on one form, Barga-Harbin, names the Barga region around Hailar and the city of Harbin; the slips place the gathering at Hailar, in today's Inner Mongolia.
Date. The slips do not say whether their date is in the Julian or the Gregorian calendar; 9 July 1918 is stored as written.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium places TIE 00004153 in Heilongjiang and TIE 00004148 in Gansu; the slips on both place the gathering at Hailar, in today's Inner Mongolia.
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium gives the Harbin sheet the number 1372, the museum's register number on its folder label and form; the collector's number on its form and slip is 56.
- The form on the Harbin sheet has its month and year overwritten; its slip and the museum's label give 9 July 1918.
